I am only familiar with stock tires and was wondering how loud, annoying, obnoxious, and "streetable" these BFG MT tires are.
I use my Disco for off-road and regular street driving. (not much driving over 60 mph.)
Sorry for the rookie questions

Old - pretty loud, newer KO style - wee bit better, IMHO, but nothing you couldnt overcome with louder stereo :-)

Then again - i am not using them, after trying to drive next to rig that got them on.

Diddo here....the MT-KM's are not loud at all. A little bit of a hum, but nothing out of the ordinary when you are comparing to standard driving noise from the shapely brick we call the 'Disco.

P.s. the "KO's" are a designation for the "All Terrain" tire from BFG, not the Mud terrain...

I have BFG MT's (265/75/16). On road, I am running 37 psi in the front and 42-45 in the rear. There is no noise at all, even if I have the windows down.

I have noticed that if I am on pavement and the air is a little too low - they are noisier, but by not much.

I do not belive that the MT are that loud. However I would say that they are louder then the Dunlop mud rovers I have. However the MTs have one advantage over the Dunlop that being 3 ply vs the 2 ply of the dunlop. They are not loud. They are a little bumpy when you take turns at lower speeds, but other then that not too bad. However have you thought about getting the Goodyear MT/Rs? I know many like them much more then the BF, just an idea.

Hi

MTR`s are OK in a straight line but do hum a little on long smooth corners.

Not at all intrusive though.

Luke - thanks.
I am not big fun of BFG tires, so i am stand corrected :-) KM style.

Still dont like them though - not b/c of noise thing - they are mud terrains after all, but b/c of performance. Subjective of course.. :-)

Segei, no problem about the corrections, just trying to help a fellow Dwebber out. And don't ever apologize for opinion, it's what makes us human and this site valuable.

I am running 265/75 MT/KM's...they aren't bad at all. It's actually kinda pleasant with the windows down...then again, I'm a Rover junkie. Also, these tires are load range D, so you should run more pressure in them...this way they will last longer. I don't remember what I set mine at, but for street driving it's over 50. FWIW...

Matt,

IMHO, When new the BFGs aren't too loud. It's once they start to wear that they get loud. It's been my experience that in the last half of their tread life they're loud as hell... I actually went from worn BFGs to Super Swamper SSRs on a D90 and the SSRs were actually noticably quiter...

Thanks,
Nathan Hindman

I have the same setup as Jamie, the BFG's don't bother me at all. I also have a safari roof rack, that's loud!

I heard that siping the inside blocks can help reduce noise as well. Does anyone know if this is true with the BFG's?

Well, NathanH hit the nail on the head. My BFG TracEdges with about 45k miles on 'em have grown *square*, despite frequent balancings, rotations, and lately, Equal. Time to retire. (Wasn't that the Cooper logo?)

Anyway, I'm leaning to the Dunlop Mud Rovers, as a local tire place has 'em for about $100 a corner. Other than the 2 vs 3 ply issue, any other comments?

I used to run *8* ply tires on the '72 Series III - talk about square tires in cold weather....

Cheers

Zach,
Thanks for your comment about tires lasting longer with more air pressure. Whenever you get a chance, would you mind taking a peek at what your psi numbers are? I'm thinking I'd better get some more air in my tires pronto! :-) Thanks, Jamie

The MTRs are noisy. They're quiet when you first get them but they progressively get so bad you about have to yell to talk to the passengers. I did get 40k out of mine. I got so sick of the noise I put Yokohama Geolander AT II's on. There so quiet I can't believe it. I hope they stay that way.
