just wondering if anybody has any idea what this sound is. it sounds as if it would be a bad fuel pump, but it's coming from under the hood. just replaced the alternator and sound is still there. maybe the powering steering pump. any idea's? thanks in advance for any thoughts |

john, could also be starving for air. have you checked the intake manifold, filter, etc? just a thought. |

i've had the truck gone over very closely. it runs 100% given 160k. i think it is the power steering pump though. parked it on an angle yesterday and noticed a pink liguid dripping from under it. opened the hood and found the power steering pump leeking like a sive. anyway looking forward to replacing it today hopefully that will cure the winning. thanks.. |

Bearings. Check your pulley bearings (Belt tensioner), they tend to whine and drive you nuts from time to time. I believe they cost +/- $20 bucks from Napa. Real easy fix. Glenn |

The steering will whine when the fluid is low. The english dont seem to do hydraulics very well. Just keep filling the resevoir for now. Steering pumps and hoses are fairly notorious leakers on discos. ATF is usually reddish/clear oil. Previous posters have spoken highly of replacement pumps from meridianautoparts.com The hoses can be removed (mark them or diagram before you do) and taken to any hydraulic shop for replacement, fairly cheaply and will be much better. I've heard NAPA does hydr hose replacement also. |

My '95 made a strange high pitch whistle for a while and finally my water pump went out. Not positive that was making the sound but I haven't heard the sound since replacement. The whistle was only noticable at idle. |
