It's all the worst parts of the new Range Rover and the Freelander!

Pics 1-6: No more roof "step" (and they try to hide it with that Freelanderesque rolled rear section?)?
Pic 8: Standard flip-up mirror?
Pic 9: No more swinging door?

Thanks, Alan. I think. I'd hoped that the less disguised these prototypes got (and I've seen one in person too), the more I'd like them. It's been the other way around.

But, if they make a more generic LR to appease the soccar moms of the world and thus sell more cars. That's ok if they then bring the defender back or something similar... for the off roading crowd. (I can dream can't I?)

That's what I'm thinking too Traveltoad, I would love to get a hold of a 2005 or 06 D110 or D90. This thing will maybe get LR back in the black and they will bring the Defender here.

How could Land Rover have gone so right with the new Range Rover and so bad with the Disco?? That car looks so much like the new Explorer it's ridiculus!!!! At least the engine has changed but then again that could be a bad thing!!!

Perhaps it is the `05 Freelander. The hood and the rear as well as the interior look more like a Freelander than a Disco. That is my thought and that is what I'm telling myself, because there is now way that is going in my garage as a "DISCO!":-(

Great, I can see all the questions now:

"Can I install used shocks from a '97 D1 on my 05?"

"Can I upgrade my '00 D2 tail lights to the '05 configuration?"

"What's a Cheap Bastard way to lift my IFS / IRS?"

I can see the horror now.......

Maybe somebody needs to forward this thread and the others on the '05 Disco to LR HQ. I too thought maybe I will like it once some good pics are released, but the more I see it the more I don't like it, the rear end is hideous and the boxy shape reminds me too much of the Honda Element as Mike G. pointed out. No alpine windows, no raised roof, IFS, IRS, what a bummer, Ford really knows how to F**K things up. Showed pics to my wife and she likes it, so there you go, soccer moms like it.

OK. Now I'm seeing some things I like. I'm studying one of the photos at that DinSide site (http://www.dinside.no/php/art.php?id=92791&bid=7), thinking, "Why don't they just push that big red button right now and get it over with?" Then I see the controls on the center console. It seems the new Discovery will have, or be available with air suspension. The lever on the right is labeled with an icon of a freeway, and an icon of a mountain. Height adjustment? The knob to the lever's left is labeled with icons that look like different tilt configurations or road surface shapes. And the trans shift lever - obviously for a Tiptronic-style automatic. Hill Descent Control gets a big, easy-to-find button of its own. This is not to say that, with an interior that looks like this, I'd not want to drive with my eyes closed, but here are some impressive mechanical features.

All I have to say is it looks like one of those damn Honda Elements. I don't think this will boost the sales of Disco's for Land Rover. Isn't the engine gonna be a 175 h.p. V6?

I don't consider that to be a Land Rover. They might as well take the LR logos off, and put Ford ones on. I hope those things sell like dog shit so Ford will learn a lesson. The whole thing makes me sick.

The G4 challenge will have to be held in the grocery store parking lots of suburbia. Why dont they call it the Ford Street Rover and try again on a design for the new Land Rover. Seriously, a Honda Rav 4 looks more like a 4x4 than that!!

Again I bet this is the new FREELANDER! Really look at the body and the inside. LR has been working on the Freelander for a long time and I'm sure this is it. It doesn't have alpine windows the interior concept flows to the new interior better the rear tail lights are the same and look at the hood for crying out loud its the damn FREELANDER. I don't think LR is that messed up to make that big of a change as in making big steps backward esp. in the departure and approach, look what they have done to the `03 they gave it a better approach over the `02 by taking out the bottom fog lights and moving them into the bumper. They are just freaking us out and when the real Disco is revealed we'll be happy and go out and buy it. Thats my .02

It is definitely not the new Freelander, it is the new Disco. The Freelander is a much smaller vehicle and looking at the pics, the dimensions are that it is a Disco. How about a little wager Rick, a six-pack of ??.

Let's see..

No room to work in the engine compartment.
Exhaust below the rear axle.
Spare tire underneath.
Body style like a Honda Element, without the charm.
No roof gutters. Putting a decent rack on this thing is going to be interesting, if anyone ever bothers.

But the cup holders look like any improvement!

"Ford Street rover"....I love it!!!! Look on the bright side chaps...our D2s and D1s just went up in value!!!! Seriously though....baaarrfffff.
AND...look at that dashboard...looks like you REALLY have to take your eyes off the road to change a CD!!!!! It's just horrible....ARE YOU LISTENING FORD???? Are you making up for the basically great job on Jaguar by burying Land Rover....I cannot believe people are soooo stupid as to buy an Explorer with a green oval on it!!!!

From Landrover's worldwide market, the new Discovery makes perfect sense.

Look at the full Landrover range and see how it fits into the ranges of each of its competitors. In it's marketplace it is competing against the midsized family 4wd. Despite being ugly as buggery it will be probably be a better 4wd than the similar offerings from Toyota/Nissan/Mitsubishi; it's competitors in the rest of the world.

The rest of the world has the Defender/D90 to compete against the 78 series LandCruiser or the Nissan Patrol. The reason for the Discovery changing the way it is could be found in the situation where neither Nissan nor Toyota export their "legitimate" 4wd's to the USA (nor Jeep sell their diesel Cherokees in the country of manufacture)...its just not economically viable.

I think it's pure genius!!! MUCH SAFER VEHICLE! Just think how difficult it will be to take your eyes away from the road to look at that god awful interior!!! Land Rover should do what Toyota did and start a "luxury" division. They could make these ugly, POS, Mall cruisers for the masses, and then make a fully locked, real winch bumper w/recovery points, slightly raised truck for the rest of us! I think I might send this suggestion in. What do you think DWeb??? No Brainer or what???

Hey Fellas.

Has anybody thought about sending this to LRO or one of the other major LR magazines. Maybe they could get us some real clarification. I'm with the guys that think this is the Freelander. I think we would be hearing a huge outroar from our friends in the UK if they saw something like this. There isn't a car company out there that would make such a dramatic change to a vehicle in the wrong direction (I hope).

Denial is more than a river in Egypt. This is the Disco -- look at the height and size compared to the Range Rover in the pictures in the other thread.

Buy up an old Series truck, or a TLC from before they were "luxury SUVs" -- that's the solution. And for God's sake, take care of those D1's and CDL-equipped D2's!

Our only hope is that the Defender is reintroduced to the US market. I would gladly cart my kids in one of these if I could off-road in a new defender. If this is the new Disco and no reasonable off-road alternative is introduced we have been abandoned by LR. The best news would be that this is only a concept car; second best would be that this is the Freelander. One can hope. Let us Pray

NO MORE DENIAL!!! THIS IS THE NEW DISCOVERY!
The only thing its going to Discover is Rt. 66 and shopping mall parking lots!
Ford is testing this "thing" at a racing facility...Hmmmmmm. They are modifying all Rovers to be sleek, aerodynamic, and fast...Hmmm. They are lowering ground clearance and eliminating "boxy" design...Gasp. Ford isnt going to put a winch on that car. They are putting damn racing stripes on it! Iam telling you!! Ford is taking the "Land" out of Land Rover right before our eyes! I dont want 2005 to be the year the tradition, history, and aura of Land Rover dies. We better contact Ford real soon!

to take it to the next horror show...ford is considering using the focus platform for the next generation freelander. a land rover focus...thats just fucking great...i know there is some debate as to the role of the freelander, but putting it on a ford econobox platform? just put a bullet in it's land rover head now and save us the suffering. i guess i need to plan now to live my future in the past...take care of your trucks.

If this is really going to be the new disco, my next one must be a defender. This has way to much ideas of japanese cars. I used to have the sticker "mooi geen japanner" on the back.
I wonder who thought of the crazy idea to open the back door to the top, now small people will have to jump, in order to close that door again. That is, if the car has about the same height as the previous disco.
No way am I going to drive in such a thing, I might consider going back to the old 504 Dangel ;-)

If this means anything remotely close to what I am thinking I am not to sure I want the next Defender.

"An all-new model is slated for next summer, however, to address these concerns: built on a fresh platform to be shared with the next Defender...."

You guys should have figured it out by now. All new Land Rovers will be IFS/RFS, including the Defender. We've all known this for years. It is the wave of the future. Just look at Jeep. Within the next few years the only solid axle vehicles will be 3/4 ton and larger trucks. Some of them (Chevy) are even going to IFS.

These photos are definitely of the next Discovery. I've seen one, next to a D1 "chase truck", and the prototype was clearly larger than the old Discovery accompanying it (which looked a lot better, BTW.) This was on my morning drive to work here in the Southern California mountains, and the DIII looked a bit dusty, so I can only hope that it's been tested here and there offroad. I wonder how it did...

I suspect the new Disco will use a lot of the technology that is used in the current Range Rover. It is a very capable vehicle.

Keep in mind most manufacturers aren't thinking about the aftermarket when they produce these trucks. Land Rover is thinking about making $$ and developing the most capable truck that will be priced competitevly within their given target market.

If we want the Land Rover name to survive this is how it has to be. Plus you can thank California for a lot of this B.S. They have so much legislation regarding the guidelines that current vehicles must meet. This along with all the "Lawyers" who get sue happy over anything (Read Air Bag Laws) have brought off-road vehicles to what they are today. The only good thing that might come out of some of this is eventually LR will bring over a Diesel. However it will not be anything remotely close to the 200 or 300TDI we all adore.

Land Rovers vehicles have been previously marketed by association with Safari, Africa, exploring, Camel Trophy, Moab, G4, and MUD. Most dealerships have an "off-road course" for driving their trucks. I hate to say it but Hummer and jeep may fill the void when Land Rover moves to the racetrack. End of an era!

Who says indepenent suspension sucks! Next time you run into an ex-camel trophy driver you ask them, they will tell you that indepenent suspension - when done properly (new RR) is awesome offroad. Each wheel is able to do its own thing.
I'm hearing Disco 3 will also have 300hp Jag V8 and diesels for NA! I am also hearing that those lights are not production, just a disguise.
Disco 3 will also handle great onroad just like new RR. But according to you guys the new Range Rover sucks - RIGHT!

Hey Larry,

I saw that new Chevy with the 4 wheel steering and IFS/IRS. Looking underneath it revealed a lot of weaknesses from the steering components. They resembled small diamater flight control rods that one little rock could cause you $100's in damage.

Wish these were available here, they seem capable enough :-) :-) Seems the trend in real offroading will be home made purpose built stuff since most of the off the rack "station wagons" will be so castrated and so expensive to customize that it will be cheeper to import or self produce.
New nich martket for you entrapaneurs sp?.

Go here for more spyshots etc.: www.LRforum.com, text is norwegian on the most interesting article http://www.lrforum.com/main/documents/articles/0008/no0008.htm
but you get the point browsing pics. The direct linked article is mid august, so were among the first spyshots of the real thing... Beware: Lot's of the published pics are on computer-steroids...(photoshop jobs), easily detected if looking at some of the details (covered in the norwegian text...)

Land Rover is planning a summer 2004 unveiling, maybe at next year’s British Motor Show, re-timed for May. Sales start in the autumn.
this is for USA?
MAY 2004?
and what is AUTUMN?

Well, there are new 4x4 solutions coming to the market. While this is sacrilege for a Rover owner, the options for a new offroad vehicle are getting limited.

http://www.crosslander4x4.com/

Problem is, the rear is leaf springs so can you say ride quality = cr@p. But, if only going offroad is your game... For me, I'd buy a good used Disco or Range Rover.

The crosslander is junk...I think we have already discussed this in multiple threads multiple times...

p.s. I will reserve my judgement until I see a new DIII
