I'm am rigging up a CB this weekend using Firestik's 18 ft. Firering cable (#RG-58A/U). Since I am obviously going to have extra cable, should I route the wire to take up as much length or is it ok to coil up the extra wire inside the rear door (mounting on spare tire carrier)? I am thinking that the coiled wire could potentially impact performance. Don't really know, that's why I am asking.

I could impact the performance. If you have allot extra you can put it in the back door but don't coil it up together.

Remember to use an SWR meter to tune the radio after installation and before you use it the first time.

got to www.firestik.com and read about laying cable on the tech page. There is a ton of good dataz about cable and antenna technology there. If you roll your cable or cross it about you will effect teh rec/trtans potential of your radio. There is a reason all Firestik antenna cables are 18 feet - not 20 or some other length.

Have the same cable in my '97 Disco and I just ran it from rear to front hiding it behind the headliner. Before criping/soldering the cable to the connector that plugs into the radio, cut off the excess wire length and there's no coiling issue.

On a related topic, I have a Firestik door jam mount that I re-engineered (read: bent it with hammer and a vise to a different shape) to use at the top passenger side of the rear door.

Did any of you also run a separate ground wire?

(I don't think the aluminum body panel that the mount is attached to is properly grounding the radio regardless of what the CB shop tech is telling me.)
