I am going to get the Greg Davis bumper so I will lose the turn signals there. Instead of using the brake lights I want to add some round amber lights.

Here are the 4" round lights I want to get:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33713&item=243 3447632

Here is where I want to mount them, where the orange circles are:

What do you guys think about this idea? Will it look bad or junky.

Thanks for any thoughts on this,
Jamil

Jamil,

What about putting them in the bumper?

If Greg has a drill press just have him use a hole saw to drill two holes that will fit the lights that you want, this is how I did it on my bumper, except I put clear backup lights in the bumper and moved the blinker up into the tail light.

Here are a few pics to help you visualize what it would look like

Dave,
I think your way looks much cleaner. Who makes that bumper? Is that the LR hitch under there?

Where did you order the small flush lights from? I can't seem to find anything smaller than 4" online. All the pep boys and auto zone type store just sell junk.

Thanks,
Jamil

I think the yellow is a bit much, what about red instead of yellow it might tone it down a little.
OR how about 03 Disco tail lights, they have the turn signals in them already. The OEM tail lights might cost a futune ....

Jamil,

"Who makes that bumper?"
The bumper is my design.

"Is that the LR hitch under there"
Nope, I removed the stock hitch.

"Where did you order the small flush lights from"

I purchased the lights at a local truck supply store, they are 2" round and made by Truck-lite, they come in several diffrent sizes and shapes, just look in the phone book for a local trucker supply store.

You may be able to get some more ideas from looking in the Truck-lite catalog.

Thanks Dave.

Jim...03 tail lights are $300 each so that idea is out.

I have to agree. Since you are going with a custom bumper why cut the sheet metal (its hard to go back if you dont like.) I would just rewire the existing taillight or use some smaller ones in the bumper.

I agree with you Aaron.

Dave,
I did a search on google for truck-lite and found the lights I wanted. Thanks again.

I got fed up with breaking my back lights so I considered doing something like this and mounting them into the back panel. But this is the first sketch I did, and I dunno if I like it much!

Dean,
I actually made that same picture when I was deciding on all this. I don't think there's enough room behind the panels for that setup.

The good thing though about removing the 2 rear fogs is that they are perfect wiring for my hella double work lamp which is going on the door handle.

These are the lights I purchased...

If I were doing something like this...which I am not...I would buy some old series tail lights and mount them somewhere back there.

Hell...just take out all of the Disco tail lights and add Series lights.

hey jamil...

i just recieved my greg davis bumper today...in a different thread you mentioned some concern about the reciever sticking out a bit and it suffering damage if dragged. i can now say that if you pull the reciever off, then you will know it as most of the rear of the truck will be near by...mine is one solid bit of bumper.

Mike,

When you are installing that bumper take a real close look at the frame horns and then ask yourself if you really think the rear end of the truck will be sitting on the trail :-)

I really like the GD bumper...don't take me wrong. However it is the frame horns that are the weakest link. They are scary thin and meant to hold a light plastic bumper that seems to be designed to rip off the truck before any other damage happens.

Dave Lucas -- is that a one-off, or do you sell your bumper? Anyone have a link for the Greg Davis bumper?

yeah, curtis....

i was under the truck a few days ago looking around and i made that observation myself...;)

since replacing both front and rear bumpers, i have been kinda unimpressed with the "protection" the stock stuff offered in an off roading context. i know it's purpose is more damage control (to the human cargo), but i think i will be more happy with a little steel leading and following.

like we used to say in the bicycle shops in the 80's, "steel is real!"

my thoughts though were more of a "the truck will come apart before the reciever comes off" kind of thing...

just e-mail greg, uncle roger...

Mike,

"like we used to say in the bicycle shops in the 80's, "steel is real!""

LOL. That is still the mantra, but I don't own any steel bikes anymore.

I am in the process of doing *something* in the back. I can't say it is any better or worse than what has already been done. Matter of fact, I think Greg's bumper is truly a work of art and his is for sale. Mine will be for my use only.

The only thing I doubt is the ability of those frame horns. Gregs' somewhat addresses this by having an additional mount to the inside of the wheel well. Still, I am not sure how this would hold up under multiple drags up some of the trails I run.

The stock hitch does reduce departure angle, but it is burly as hell. I know it can be winched up almost anything. Secondarily, integrating the hitch in the bumper it still going to get dragged, albeit less often. I guess time will tell, but I am struggling with trying to find a better solution.

Heres a simple solution, at least I think it's simple. I did something similar in the trunk of my motorcycle.

Pull the D2 taillights and see if there is a place to drill a hole that will fit the grommet that is used in the turn signal in the bumper. If there isn't then just disregard this idea. If there is room, then pull the wires for the respective turnsignal up into the tail frame and insert the actual bulb and grommet into the new hole and then your D2 taillight will work as a turn signal.

There is an alternative, again from the motorcycle world, where you can insert a flasher in the wiring for your taillights and turn them into turn signals. This link will show you how it is done for the motorcycle, the principles should apply the same for the LR:

Roger,

I sent you an email to the address listed in your profile about the rear bumper since I do not want to come across as advertising/pimping my products.

:-)

Thanks,

yeah curtis...;)

i have only two of seven bikes that are steel, and they are 85 and 88 vintage...everything else is ti or al..."walking the walk" is for suckers!

for 90% of what i do, i think i will not be a tail dragger...so i think i should be good...anyway, i figure if i damage greg's bumper, i will have totally screwed my stock one. i have not installed this one yet, so i don't have a *real* solid idea of what is back there, but so far i like what i see for my needs. i hope you will show us what you come up with...

Yeah that trailer hitch sure is strong. I got rear ended on Monday when a compact car went under me in the back. Ruined their hood and grill but nothing happened to me.

I have no idea what's under the bumper back there, but it's disappointing that the mounting points are weak. But the added ground clearance will be a big plus. I wouldn't have needed to use the winch in this situation...

Where are these "frame horns"? Can I see them without removing the stock bumper? (Haven't received the new one yet)

Mike - I certainly will not promise anything better than what is out there. However, whetever my resluts are I do plan to post the process of making them in the "Tech" section so that others can improve on what I have learned. It should be easy to duplicate and make improvements upon so it will be for the greater good to place it in the public domain.

Jamil - the frame horns are very easy to discover. Simply remove the connectors from the turn signal lights, then remove the two lonely bolts that hold on the bumper. Within five minutes from the start the bumer will be off. Reverse this for reinstallation.

For what it's worth, on my rear bumpers that include the hitch, there is a 1/2" plate that is welded along the bottom of the bumper, sandwiches the receiver, and bolts to the rear crossmember. That way there's more than just the original mounting brackets supporting the bumper and hitch. I haven't had any reports of one budging yet.

Yep - Iv'e popped off the same piece about a year ago. I had my wife pick up some of those little plastic "trees" at the dealer. $8 each. Had I been there I would have told them where they could stick 'em.
