I am partial to Manual Transmissions in general.

My question is more specific to the Disco:

Are there specific manual trans problems with the Disco? Would you recommend a manual over an Auto? I've driven manual cars off-road and I would rather have it that way again.

Thanks for any advice you can provide

Hi Boris
The 380 box has had a problem in the past where the main output shaft splines wear prematurely.
This was resolved by LR on later boxes by addding a cross drilled shaft. People like Steve Parker, here in the UK have a splash plate that directs oil onto the shaft and that helps. I would pull the PTO cover off and look if I was considering buying. Might have to supply a new gasket though.
I love my manual and would never have it any other way, but the majority of guys here have an auto, and they love them to.
Personal preference.

Boris-
I have a 94 Disco with a 5-speed and it doesn't have any problems to speak of with 142K on, except I can't get the fill plug out but we're working through that.

That being said I would carefully consider getting a manual vice auto for a Disco, I've always driven manuals too but if I had it to do again I would likely strongly consider the auto b/c it does allow for more concentration on the task at hand outside the vehicle, along with the other benifits of the auto while offroading that many of the guys here will point out I am sure.

There you have my somewhat contradictory statement, while I have a manual and certainly like it for some things (percieved control of the vehicle for example) I think I would go with auto if I were starting from scratch-for a Disco mind you, I wouldn't say that about a car or anything like that.
Like Peter said, its all personal preference.

Manuals are much less common in the US. One nice thing is that they are definately faster than the autos. Manuals do have a much higher failure rate than the autos... other than leaking, the auto rarely fails. We have both an auto and a manual, and I guess it's personal preference. I like the auto, my husband likes the manual.

My 2¢ is that if you go off-roading, go with the auto. It can be pretty tough when your trying to maneuver and need to be on the gas and brake at same time. (there is a term for this and I can't remeber what it is).

"Left foot braking" is the term. I think I will look for a decent manual. Keep the tech tips coming. Thanks.

Isn't that how you should drive an auto also? ;)
