Do you really need the washer when replacing the oil filter? I noticed that after replacing the oil filter with the washer, that a little increase in oil leak was present. Do you really need the washer? Also, does the Lucas Oil Stabilizer helps out to minimize oil leak?

I guess it's a washer. It's bronze in color, when I bought the oil filter from the dealer, they also sold me a metal washer. Where do you get this Lucas stuff?

Now that was funny Raymond! I think the lesson here is when you are sold a part and you don't know for sure what it is, just ask.
Better to feel stupid in front of the parts manager than feel stupid in front of the Service Manager.

Actually, I got my oil changed at Jiffy Lube and just told them to put the washer, I did not really specify where it goes. Good thing they got it right. Regardless, it still my bad! By the way, I always get the Land Rover oil filter from the dealership. Would there be a comparable oil filter I can get at a local auto store? If so, what's the best out there?

Raymond - there are piles of them around - all around 10$ (give or take couple). Just look up numbers in x-reference books they have. I am normally just ordering them online(northernautoparts.com lately, as they have my preferred oil and filters in stock all the time) for my both rigs, as its easier, and you dont have to scratch head in front of display. :-)

Small block Ford or Mopar filter - most common filters in the US. Don't bother with online ordering of a common item! :-)

Leo-
Called the a local distributor of Wix filters. $5.58 (US). Not bad considering I pay $15 for a Land Rover filter. Why WIX?

Raymond,

Do a search on oil filters, and you'll find a lot of info.

I also saw a cut away display at a parts store that showed a Wix and a Fram filter. There was no comparison in the construction, the Wix was far superior.

Wix makes nice filters, they have a lot of experience and they are the quality of or better the LR filters. They use high quality filter materials , strong case design.

I found this article - and It probably can explain a little better what makes a good filter then I.
