After a long drive, I heard a squeaking sound that I think might be from the serpentine belt. When transmission is set to park the squeak went away. Is this from the belt? Can I spray some lubricant to stop the squeak? |

If you are only getting the squeak while in gear, I don't think it would be a belt. But I could be wrong. If it is a belt, you should be able to hear it even in park. I would get a long screw driver or if you own one a mechanics stethoscope and check each item that the belt goes through you will hear a grinding sound of sorts if it is a bad bearing. (check the the idle pulley) I believe on the pre-'97 models it is just a bearing change. |

Sometimes I hear the squeak when parked and when engaged. There are times that I do not hear the squeak at all. The consistent and disturbing "noise" I hear is when I turn off the engine. I hear a little squeak before the engine turns off. |

I would like to hear options on that too .. Mine making odd squeaks when i am in low gears and moving seriously slow.. And then after-squeak when turning off.. But then i recently changed belt so it shouldnt be case... Infamous steering pump squeak (cant locate source, sounds like its somewhere near center) ? |

Sounds like it could be the idle pulley, but I would still do as I posted above. Mine was the idle pulley, but it could be a bearing going in anything up front....check everything. |

its sounds like the idler pulley. on D2's there has been a problem with them breaking. Mine cracked and shredded the serpentine belt and of course left me stranded for several hours. If you are under warranty the dealer should replace it as there is a new metal idler pulley that corrects the problem. |

same thing here on a 95 disco with 160k. squeaking when idling and once the acceelerator is pushed goes away. then comes back when it returns to reg. idle. my power steering pump has been low on fluid then it completely drained on me. i beleive it is the power steering pump, but not 100% sure. i will be replacing the pump as soon as get the new one so i will update. |

My PS pump leaks like a really leaky thing as well, but I don't think that is where my squeak is coming from. It sounds like the pully. If I spreay it with wd-40 it goes away for a short while then comes back. |

I had the same problem,97 D1 72K Turned out to be the water pump. remove the belt and turn the water pump slowly.you should be able to hear the noise.i would only hear it when i shut the truck down.and once in awhile out on the trail when i let it idle for long periods with the a/c on. |

-David Sounds like you nailed it. Mine does a last squeak after you turn the ignition off. Lately, I have not heard the squeak on idle while park because I have not driven far or have the a/c on. But I still hear the last squeak when turning the engine off. If it's the idle pulley, the squeak that happens when you turn of the engine should not happen, right? |

Yes, it will happen. The belt is changing tension. Just get a screwdriver and find out. It will take all of 5 min. to find out which one it is. |

I just sprayed some belt dressing on the serpentne belt. The intermittent squeak can still be heard while engaged on drive and reverse but, not in park. Does this squeak (that is more prevalent when truck is in engage in drive or reverse) can still be a cause of a worn/slipping belt or loss of proper tension? |

Sounds like idler pulley. I had 3 go. If you get mud in the idler pulley it will start to squicking or humming noise, Then after about 8000 miles the pulley goes destroying the belt, (I stoped quick enough not to destroy the last belt.) I took it to the Dealer ship with the noise and the techs sand Land Rover to that. I would definitley look into changing your idler pulley. Its less than 100 dollars. |

Put scerwdriver to your ear and other end close to pulley bearing touching metal. Not a moving part!!!You will look stupid with a screwdriver in you ear. You'll hear the grinding sound. |

grab a hold of the fan and if you can wiggle it side to side then the water pump is shot and that is this sound you are hearing. if you can release the tension on the pully you will notice the pump pully will move similsr to checking wheel bearings. and yes use a stethiscope as mentione above. a long extension does the trick |
