Well, I replaced the stepper motor, checked for stray arcs in the dark, replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs and wires, cleaned out the emission "T" (it was clogged). It still takes alot of cranking to start it and when it does it idles poorly. I usally have to rev it up on the start or it will die. It then hunts around for the correct idle and winds up at about 700 rpm. When I put it in drive the idle drops to 500 and does not recover. Tomorrow I am going into the distribtuer to check the "air gap". Any ideas? |

You are looking for 665 to 735 rpms in neutral with everything (like a/c off). In gear: 600 +- 28 rpms no a/c. 650 +- 28 rpms a/c on. Did you confirm you had no vacuum leaks? Check the brake vacuum connections and the heater/ventilation connections. The big breather on the valve cover needs cleaning often with some degreaser. After the air gap and vacuum leaks check I would verify timing, then run through the electical diagnostic checks in the manual (tedious but it may get to that). On the fuel side you could verify proper pressure from the fuel pump at the fuel rail. What did the old plugs look like? Sooty, white, brown? Check www.rangerovers.net for sensor failure symptoms and other good info for the 3.9L motor. Do you have the shop manual? Well worth the $$$ and has all this troubleshooting detailed. |

if disco (GEMS), your your idle should be 700(+/-20) with all loads off and will vary slightly with loads. marc |
