I bought two gallons of Dextron III transmission fluid to replace whats in the truck now. Is this enough? Any tips on replacing fluid? |

2 gallons should be more than enough. Get a couple of 1 gallon milk bottles. Pour the old fluid into them. This will give you a rough estimate of what needs to go back in. Saves some time when pouring it in through the dipstick tube. Refill to the 'full' mark with the engine off. Then start it and check again. If you overfill, loosen the plug and drain the excess. Automatic transmissions don't like being overfilled.

You will only get part of the fluid out by draining the pan. Most of it sits in the torque converter and plumbing. I just drain the pan contents and refill at the next 3 or 4 oil changes. |

At every oil change I drain the transmission pan and replace what fluid I am able. Usually I replace about 5-6 quarts before it is full. I have done this quite often by now. I usually put in a gallon (4 quarts) initially and then check-fill-check-fill from there, being careful not to let the vehicle warm up too much because the fluid level is checked cold. Yes, it might be handy to measure how much you take out so you can replace it with an equal amount, but I have noticed that a different amount drains out each time. Just do not overfill. |
