I have a 97 Disco and was on an trip this last weekend. About 100 miles into the trip on a slight grade the engine started to miss severely and die, all in about 5 seconds. I shifted into neutral and the engine would re-start with the turn of the key. I continued another hundred or so miles and it did the same thing on flat highway and once again I just shifted into "N" and restarted. The car ran another 600+ miles without another sputter. I was on edge waiting for another sputter. I replaced the VSS a month ago. It would just lose power for an instant then. Again, out of the blue at speed the engine goes into a severe miss-like action and dies, but starts up immediately and runs smooth after the restart. Help

When was the last time you changed your Fuel filter?

Could be a bad Fuel pump, check the fuel pressure. Or even a fuel regulator.

Check engine light ever come on?

Of course with the restarting I may be way off base.

Very possible that its your fuel pump. I had the exact same symptoms on a long trip a couple of weeks ago. Restarting would alleviate the symptom temporarily, but then it would recur with increasing frequency. Fuel pressure checked out okay, but of course I couldn't check when it was giving the problem. I changed the fuel filter first, since its easier, and then I replaced the fuel pump last weekend. No more problems.

I may also be the connector going to the fuel pump, I have heard (read I have not had this problem) that either the connector or the wiring going into the fuel pump will sometimes get weak and/or disconnected.

up a slight grade in 4th gear at highway speed can also be an indication of valves that are starting to stick. I am curious to know if your check engine light ever illuminated.

Mine was doing that. The check engine light would come on. The code showed a miss on 6 and 1 cylinders. Those 2 plugs were bad looking so we replaced all of them. No change. I thought it might be the fuel pump too because it would do it on acceleration. Wasn't that either. Turned out to be the coil pack was going bad.

Honestly, I did not notice the light...Stuff like getting off of the road and restarting so quickly didn't make that obvious. I will look more carefully if/when it happens again.

John: What is the coil pack. Is that where the spark leads plug into?
