I know this model was first sold in the US in 1995 and came with Lucas electrics till 99 then switching over to Bosch. Since I have a limited budget I am more prone to shop for 95 -98 P38s. So my question is are there any differences between 95 - 98 P38s ?? Thanks in advance.

I don't think there is much or any difference in the 95-98 P38s but I think the newer ones are built better and have some of the bugs worked out, I would be hesitant on getting a 95 as it was the first year model. Having owned a 95 4.0se previously and now a 96 4.0se, I can tell you that the 96 seems to be put together much better and everything seems more solidly built. I would try to find as new a one as you can afford and preferably one with a maintanence history. You do not want to buy one that someone has neglected and failed to properly maintain, it will be a timebomb.

Thanks I agree that is how I bought my 97 Discovery. Having looked at so many with no records especially at dealers I was able to find one high mileage Disco with about 80% complete service records more importantly the most recent ones. It made me feel a little more comfortable and so far so good. But my sights are set on a P38 which is what I wanted in the first place . I started my LR addiction with a 93 RR County LWB now the Disco and hopefully soon the pinnacle... P38 ! Thanks for the info.

If you have noticed, the prices of P38s, especially older ones are great. I think people are scared of these vehicles because of the potential repair cost and that's one of the reason prices are so low, plus its a Land Rover the depreciation sucks. There are now enough resources, websites, BBS, etc. to diagnose and repair the P38 without bringing it to the dealer. Good luck in your search, we need more P38's on this board.

Agree ! Before my Disco purchase I drove all the way to CT from NJ to check out a 96 4.0 and just couldnt bring myself to buy it I guess I was scared from some of the noises this car was making. Anyway to make a long story short a dealer in NY bought this car to resell. I could of bought it for 8 grand but still didnt think it was worth it. BTW the dealer has it listed on cars.com for 10,700. Again I would spend a little more just to get some documented history of the vehicle and would rather buy from a private owner.

yeah, P38s kick ass. you can already see a trend here and there. people dumping discos and going with earlier P38s.

i think the most noticeable change was with 2001 and on...

the P38 has always been on my "Next Project" list. i actually bought a 4.6 HSE, now just trying to convince the wife it needs a lift and big tires :-) i didn't think it would be too hard, because she likes driving the Disco (3" lift, 255/85's) more than the RR HSE.

I was thinking is it better to buy a lower mileage (60 - 90) or go for a higher mileage (100 - 130k). I figure in the higher mileage ones their may have had more major work done and also the price will probably be lower .

I've got a '95 P38 and think it's great. I have owned it for 2 years and have put about 42k miles on it, 119k on it now. I had the Air suspension fail and put on a Atlantic British conversion kit. Have since added OME Springs just like Alans and put on 31" tires. Had to replace the Drivers ide window regulator and had all 3 Blend Motors replaced when I bought it from the dealer. Over all though I have been very pleased and have had much less problems than my friend and his '96 D1.

Thats great to hear because I have heard many horror stories with these Rovers. Everything from bad air suspensions to no climate control working, oil leaks, etc. But ya just gotta love em !

I used to own an '89 RRC, and I think RR's are great looking and very capable off-road vehicles. I think when I get older I'll have a P38 with lift and tires etc... They look great with a lift and bigger tires. I would like to see somebody go all out and really modify a P38 (big lift, big tires, upgraded engine, bumpers, the works). That would be neat to see. Someday maybe, it's all about having the time and money.
