I have been looking around on the internet and such with the intent to purchase a used Discovery in the next few months. I am going to use the vehicle for off road purposes, and as I already have a new car, I would prefer to purchase an older model.

So I have a few questions. What are the advantage/disadvantages of owning a D1 over a D2 and vice versa?

And this is not a sexist comment in anyway, (so I apologize in advance to the female owners of this board). But being a female and not being automotively inclined, what type of things do I need to look out for when purchasing a used Discovery so that I do not get ripped off?

Many of the vehicles I have seen have a considerable amount of miles, as well as many have been used for off-road purposes. I have seen from some of the discussions on this board, that they have their fair share of problems.

So aside from running your normal carfax report, what things should I be looking for so that I can aquire a rover in good working order.

Sorry in advance if I am recreating a string.

Advantage of D1 over D2 is a tough question to answer. Both are great trucks and both can be modified to perform well off road.

Main advantage of the D1 is that they are older and can be bought cheaper. I hear that the D2 is a better riding truck on road and the D1 has a slight advantage off road.

What to look for when buying a used Discovery? Try to get one that is in the best overall shape.

Discoverys can have a bunch of little things (too many things to list depending on the year) that need replacing that can add up in hurry especially if you don't do the work on it yourself.

To get an idea of the cost of parts and maintenance, check out some web sites like Rovers North, Atlantic British, ect. I would recommend bringing someone with you who has a strong general knowledge of cars/4x4s or someone who is familiar with Land Rovers to help you look at the trucks.

Same applies to the trucks that have been modified. Many times you can get a better deal on a modified truck (modifications like lift, bumpers, winches, ect cost alot if you have to buy them all yourself). The owners of modified trucks also tend to maintain/care for their trucks more than some of the owners who buy them and just drive them on the road.

Happy hunting-Mark

from last half of 2001 (late DII) and on, it is difficult (at this time) to accuate the center differential lock (cdl). if you *really* plan to use this truck off road, you will have at least some advantage over non-cdl trucks if you have the ability to lock your center diff. if you are not familar with the center diff lock, you should try a search here, as it is a pretty popular topic. good luck to you.

D1 = slightly narrower, about 6" shorter, 16" wheels, less electronics, Central Diff Lock, more aluminum body panels than D2, Lucas electronics system

D2 = slightly wider, 6" longer (wheelbase is the same, just longer ass), more electronics (Active Cornering Enhancement, Hill Decent Control, Electronic Traction Control), no Central Diff Lock, 17" or 18" rims (can't remember which but they're definitely bigger than D1s), Bosch electronics system

Amy - really depends on what your criteria is. The D2 is more road friendly than the D1 because it's bigger, wider and has all the electronic stuff in it, plus it's a bit more plush and has nicer cosmetics (more pleasing to the eye?). The D1 is more off-roadish if you will, handles more like a truck than a car and a bit easier to modify if you choose to. As others have mentioned, the D1s are cheaper to purchase but in terms of purchasing a Disco, whether it's a D1 or D2, I'd say get as much info on the vehicle's history as possible. Best if you take someone who has a Disco/LR (and is very familiar with them) with you when you go look. Incidentally, if you see a vehicle's history that looks like it has a lot of stuff done on it, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Could mean all the major problems the Disco inherently has, have been fixed already so you're now getting a relatively trouble free vehicle.

As Michael suggested, do a search here on "differences between a D1 and D2" and you should have plenty of material to help you make a decision. Anything you can't find, just ask and someone will help you.
