Two similar occasions of the same problem - looking for potential reasons... 1)Mid August trip to Adirondack region... after driving about 225 level miles at average 80 mph, and then climbing an intermittent moderate grade for about 50 miles (at about 45-50 mph) oil pressure light flickers and then stays on steady. Vehicle "sputtering" and the tapping noise the engine has had since I have owned it getting louder. Pull over about 1 mile later, shut engine off, wait 5 minutes check oil - down 1 quart. I had topped oil off prior to the trip but chalked this up to the steady driving that its not used to. After adding oil, engine quiets back to normal tick, fine for remainder of trip. 2)Yesterday very similar - but only after 1 hour at speed (75 mph) + ascending slight grade. Oil light flickers once, chugging/sputtering/noisy. Again down approx 1 quart. Vehicle had completed 5 hour (each way) trip to the Adirondacks last weekend w/ no apparent oil loss. Again adding oil quiets tapping somewhat, and allows the 90 mile return trip home without further problems. Both occasions - no smoke or obvious oil loss. Does not drip oil (does seep in some areas as is common). Coolant level fine. Oil changed/check religiously. Compression loss? Oil pump?? Need for valve job??? Fortelling of engine failure???? Your thoughts appreciated '97 DI 103K |

Sounds like some valve issues. Minimal oil usage (at least not extremly visible) and the up hill sputtering. I think you may be do for a top end clean up or rebuild. |

Thanks Joey - I was kind of thinking along those lines too. |
