Considering replacing my Wrangler HP 255/65-16's with BFG A/T's in 255 or 265/70-16. Would prefer to buy 4 rather than 5 and have the 5th waste away hanging on the rear door. Aside from providing some interesting handling issues, would using the "undersized" spare as a short-term, emergency replacement cause any upset to the driveline/ECT? Would the differentials be able to compensate for the differences in tire diameter, i.e. approx. 29.3 in. vs. 30.7 in.? |

bad idea but of course an undersize spare is better than no spare, at least on unpaved surfaces when you're 50 miles from salvation... but onroad, your diff won't like it one bit If I have to replace one tire, I go the distance & replace both the tires on that axle so that I'm not spinning a new tire & a worn tire, that's how much you should worry about it. Do yourself a favor and buy a second spare - if you have 6 matching rims, you can rotate all 6 tires in sequence. Your tires will last forever and you'll be ahead in the long run. You'll also have 2 spares for when you head deep offroad. |

If you put on one tire that is out of size you'll basically grind your gears against one another until they are nothing but nasty looking shavings gunked up on the drain plug magnet. You'll have to buy a new diff and maybe a new transfer case. But you'll save money on the tire! I personally rotate my spare out with the other four. But I've got a professional floor jack and air tools so it's nothing to rotate every 3k miles. Having 6 tires would really rock! I've got to look into that. |

There's nothing wrong with rotating 5 offroad type tire so that your 5th isn't going to waste. |
