My D1... 4.0 1996 has 110k miles on it and I'm going to do some work on it soon. I'll probably touch up the valves, replace anything it needs and do some desludging. I'd like any suggestions of things I ought to check and any mods I can include in the work to help the mileage a bit.
It is presently still running strong, using no oil, And getting about 15mpg. I do have a little lifter noise on start up.
Thanks Gordon

Keeping proper air pressure in the tires seems to help. Removing all the extraneous stuff like aftermarket bumpers, winch, sliders, roof rack, etc. will cut down on weight and wind resistance and improve gas mileage.

Otherwise, for excellent gas mileage I'm thinking Honda CRV.

I wouldn't touch the engine if the truck is running well as it seems to be doing.

I would leave it alone as is...but convert to synthetic oil/magnacore wires/tire pressures etc etc. The synthetic will desludge the engine over time and it should go to 150K before needing work. At that time...do timing chain/piper cam/head gaskets/valve regrind/head grind

dude...if you are getting 15 miles per gallon, i would say you are already in pretty good shape. rovers were never built for speed or mileage.

15MPG!!! You have got to be kidding me. I get 12.5 on average. Sometimes though, when I travel downhill with the wind I get 15. Mine is a 2000 DS2. I would say you should keep whatever magic sludge is in your engine and build up on your valves. It seems to be helping.

best i got on my 96 was 17-18mpg on a road trip from St. Louis to Cape Cod back in 1998. stock tires, Bosch +4's, Magnecor wires, K&N, Flowmaster and Mobil 1 synthetic fluids.
YMMV

now it's about 10mpg modded disco and 15-16mpg on my RR 4.6

15 mpg @110k miles? damn it man! thats encouraging. a new set of o2sensors will help. they do effect your final fuel trim.thats about it for possible extra mpg. how far into the motor are you going? think about a timing chain with those miles. and while your in there a new timing cover with a new oil pump would be nice. that will help longevity. if you are taking the heads off. you will have the intake and valley pan off you could replace your lifters. the lifters and oil pump should take care of the start up noises your hearing.

I'm getting 11.9 - 12.4 mpg on my '96 with 99,600 miles. I know I need new O2 sensors, but I've never seen >14 mpg, even 70k miles ago. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I have a DII with 33K on the odometer and I have never even seen 12.5 mpg. even across country with cruise control on. Maybe I should have saved my money on the low mileage DII and gone with a older, cheaper, and better MPG model. Or I could just ease up on the skinny pedal and stop driving like an idiot to work. Oh well...

Luke, the good news is just because you ease up on the skinny pedal doesnt mean you have to stop driving like an idiot.i prefer driving like an idiot, thats what got me to work today! my mpg suck no matter what i do. but hey atleast i have fun getting there.

Yup....
drive fast and like an idiot = 11 mpg
drive fast only = 11.5 mpg
drive slow = 12 mpg

I'll stick to the 11 mpg

Whats wrong with you fellas. I have a 2002 DII that gets consistently 600kilometres from 85 litres of Shell Optimax (high octane - 98RON). That equates to 16.5 miles per gallon and that is on CITY driving. Mind you, 2 things get me to that economy, first I generally change gears at less than 2000 rpm and secondly I have a 5 speed manual (stick) gearbox. I run standard 16' tyres and LR factory reccomended pressures. I have no winches; bull bar etc to add weight. The City running is stop start and speed does not exceed about 80 kph at best. I have not done a highway run for a while but I think I was looking at about 800k from 85 litres or 500 miles from 22.5 gallons - ie 22.22 miles per gallon -but to get that I keep speed to 90kph or a little less (ie about 55 miles per hour).

I guess I'm lucky!

When ken makes me get out and push, he gets 30mpg. He may seem nice, but he's a real prick in person. :-)

This concludes my current statement.

Coming back from MAR, loaded down the Pig was getting 14 mpg. But that was on the freeway cruising at 70.

However, my oil consumption is a bit high. On the average the Pig drinks a quart of oil every 738 miles.

You made the fatal mistake; the imperial gallon once used in Australia is 4.546 litres, the US gallon is 3.785.

16 miles per imperial gallon is 13.73 miles per US gallon.

Good, but not as good as the 30mpg (imperial) out of a TD5

Luke

When you live in a country where the cheapest metropolitan petrol prices are about US $2.10 per US gallon and the land mass is roughly the same of the continental USA (the shortest distance between the closest capital cities of 2 states is over 500 miles) fuel consumption becomes a consideration.

Rural petrol prices are up around US$2.50 per US gallon.

Some of us have got used to driving mobile chicanes!

Point well taken. Just more in my own misery that we don't have a diesel option. I think something along the line of "the grass is always greener on the other side..."

Garth - good point mate. Having said that if your telling me you get 30mpg on CITY RUNNING in your TD5 then you've got blisters on both hands!! Come on, what is your honest CITY running MPG?

You guys complaining about gas consumption. Leaving for work at 5:10am this very foggy morning, I saw a Disco II driving very slowly within our development. I thought it's lost. Then I heard newspaper hitting a driveway and another. Wow, the paper lady drives a DII! Amazing. She used to drive a Mitsubishi Galant.

We only complain because petrol outside of the US costs over $1 a liter...
So dont know why you are complaining, if its too much for you get an oilburner :-)

I get exactly 30mpg out of my 2001 TD5, regardless of London traffic or cruising on the motorway

Been suprised but fuel consuption seems fixed no mater how I drive. Shame Diesel is over $1 a litre here as well

Been impressed with the grunt of the TD5 and its flawless performance for the last 55,000 miles

Haha .. delivering papers in a Disco. It would cost more in fuel in an hour than she gets paid.

Yesterday I filled up the car. Since Sunday morning I had driven 1084 km on 91.7 litres (filled up at the same pump, first cut off plus 8 litres)

About 520 km of this had been a run with 3 adults, a 14 year old and a ten year old and 2 gymnastic springboards on board (so I'm a gymnastics dad); about 350 km at 110 kp/h; the balance at 100 kp/h. The other 560km or so has been mainly urban distances with a bit of semi rural driving (about 80 km).

This translates to 8.6 litres/100km or 33 miles per imperial gallon or 27.5 miles per US gallon.

I will admit that the long trip on a flat, open road helped this fuel consumption figure, but it was done a highway speeds (on or above the speed limits). However, I always get less than 10 litres/100km out of the car; normally about 9.5 on urban and semi rural roads...depends whether my wife drives the car or not, she hasn't quite got the knack that a TD5 has to be driven in a different manner than her Prelude.

I drive a stock manual with 90,000 km.

I just realised that I didn't really answer your question...I live in Melbourne, up near Mt Dandenong (near Puffing Billy if you know the place). Its 47 km into the CBD, but as parking alone costs more than a rail ticket I don't drive to work. However, as I have to either drop off or pick up my kids from training every day, I drive to a station about 7 km out of the CBD.

If you mean city driving to be peak hour CBD driving, I don't know what the fuel consumption is; but if you mean peak hour urban driving, the answer would be 9.5 litres/100 km

Fuel injector cleaner. That's the key- I used to get 12mpg (stock '96 SD w/stick, 85k miles) I put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through her, now get 18mpg on the highway. Similar experience with an '88 Subaru I used to own- mpg jumped from 27 to 35.
Try it!
Paul.

I guess I need to never be upset with the mileage I get – EVER! Unless I’m driving it like an idiot in city traffic (12.5 or worse) I normally get 13-16.5 depending on what I’m doing and how I’m doing it. I towed the wife’s Honda from NM to SC and still averaged 14-15. I did keep my speed below 60 though, and that makes a huge difference. Keep the tack pointing left and your gas will last. Be a tire pressure Nazi. In fact if I am doing some long highway runs I’ll over inflate by 7psi. - last set of Goodwrenches lasted 85K, with no change in control or wear and sold them with tread to spare… other than that make your service interval, and keep a clean air filter in there. My record mileage was 19.5 though KS and MS a couple of years ago when gas was dirt cheap, I have never seen mileage that high since. Also I always use the cheep stuff too.

Thanks for all the input... I've been away for several days in my vehicle that gets even worse mileage the any LR product, A 30ft motorhome at 8.8 mpg when its running good so I guess its all relative. I'm going to at least pull the pan and valve covers and desludge but I might do the heads if a compression ck show its needed. I'm planning on installing an oil pressure guage before I start this work to get an idea of the running oil pressure. Does anyone know what normal oil press for a 4.0 is?
Thnks again

Cheers Garth - sounds good. My economy figures were stop start peak hour in to Brisbane (which these days is getting like bloody Sydney!).

I have mates with tdi's. I like the v8/oil burner debate - adds spice to an already spicey vehicular following!

Nice place your in by the way.
