Has anybody got an idea if there is a known problem with the oil pressure "feeler" or so. I have a problem, the oil pressure light of my car comes up a bit now and then, while there is enough oil in it, it's also recently replaced, including the filter.
The engine is running fine, I first noticed it driving slowly in a trafic-jam, with no escape possibilities. If there really was no oil pressure, the engine would have broken down then, I presume.
So I think I have had luck sofar, but what can cause this light coming up a bit now and then, if the engine is running slowly?

Forgot to mention, talking about a Discovery 1998, TDI (so the 4-cilinder diesel version) with some 180.000 km done sofar.

You'll need to get a pressure gauge on there to see if thge pressure is actually low or if there's a problem with the pressure sender. The Tdi engine will run for some time with reduced oil pressure, obviously causing damage, so I'd check it out sooner rather than later.

Alan,
wouldn't the easiest way be to plug in a new pressure sender, in order to see if that's broken? It's probably not that expensive, I'll try and get one today.

Henk,

Be prepared for some oil spillage when you take out the sensor, I'd do it with the engine cold for safety's sake, and make sure the seal is in good condition when refitting.

Hello,
I've changed the sensor and drove some 50 kilometers with it this morning, no oil-pressure light coming up, but on the other hand, I drove the same distance yesterday morning, without a problem at all. Yesterday afternoon, the problem was back and I was happy I got myself the new sensor. Just waiting what's gonna happen this afternoon

Seemed to help me for one week.
Now the problem is back again. Oil light coming up once in a while, from the moment the engine is good warmed up (driven over 20 kilometres or so)
I've had no problem for over 400 kilometres and now it's back. Changed the oil once more last evening, seemed to help, but this morning, the same thing again.
Talked to the guy from Budget Parts, who import Land Rover parts in NL, but they had not seen many broken oil pumps yet, could also be worn-out crankshaft bearing.
Isn't that a bit fast after 180.000 km's?
The oil pump in this type of engine isn't in the crankcase anymore, but in front in some part, in the valve drive belt side.
Anybody ever seen similar problems.
BTW what's the original specification for oil in these engines?

15w/40

I would still beg, borrow or steal a known guage to check pressure.

Should be 25 to 55psi hot at about 2000rpms.
Pressure releif valve should be 51mm.

Does the oil pressure light comes on at idle only?
When hot only?
Getting tempted to suggest drop the oil pan and check out/replace the pickup.
