I checked my transmission fluid today--engine was cold and the gear was in neutral. When I pulled the dip stick out (transmission), I noticed that the fuel level was way pass the second hole on the stick. Is this an indication that I have too much fluid? If so, can I drain some out or should I change my transmission fluid altogether?

I was on level ground. Is there an indicator line on the transmission dip stick? If there is none, how do you know if your transmission fluid is full or not or over?

When you pull the dip stick. You will see two dots on the stick. If the fluid pass the second dot. Then you have to drain some transmission fluid. Make sure the fluid dont pass the second dot.

cant emphasize enough

idling in neutral... cause the fluid level will always "look" high if your not idling... or your not in neutral

The manual also states to cycle through all the gears before placing in neutral.

Sorry to bring this up again. Everyone probably knows manual says check in Park, but dipstick says Neutral. So, I gather from above, check in Neutral or else level is too low? Does this apply to 95 Disco as well as 1995 LWB? Thanks.

listen here is goes.....if you check it in park with the engine off the fluid level will be real high and past the second hole. so with the engine cold turn on the truck run it through the gears and then let it in neutral and leave the engine idiling and pop the hood and check the fluid as the truck is running this will give the right reading.

The proper way to check an automatic transmission is on level ground, engine warm, idling and for safety purpose in park. Park and Neutral are the same except park applies the parking paw prevents the vehicle from rolling.

The level should be between the two dots and the fluid should be pink to red.

OK, this is an incredibly stupid question, but where the heck is the transmission dipstick? I spent about 20 minutes going through the entire engine bay looking for the friggin thing, no luck. Thanks in advance for what I hope is a really simple and overlooked location.

Dave,

Do you have a D2? If so, D2s do not have a transmission dipstick. You fill through a filler hole located in the transmission sump. Dean Brown recently posted a tech article on changing transmission fluid and filter on a D2.

Hi Eugene,
Yep, mine is a D2. Thanks for the info and the link. Glad to know I wasn't just overlooking something that should have reached out and bit me.
