When I down shift and excellerate to pass someone for example, I get a lot of black smoke coming from exhaust on my 03. The dealer said this is not a problem. Anyone else having this problem and is this a problem?

If you lucky - deposits from crappy fuel and bad fuel filter. Run BG44K with one full tank, and replace fuel filter..

If you aint lucky - your cats dead as very dead things.

seems like excessive carbon in the motor or maybe a bad ring? I would think that was a problem on a brand new truck??

Black smoke = overrich mixture.....
Answer A: Start with airfilter is it clean...
LR used to do 15k filter changes thats too long....10k max
Answer B: It thought it was going to be a big diesel truck...

no check engine light and I'm running 91 octane. That is the highest we have in Denver. As for the air cleaner, I recently put in a k&n. I'll bring it up with LR the next time I take it in.

K&Ns can mess up the mass air flow sensors...cost lots of dollars to replace...put stock one in and remove any stickers before the dealer sees the vehicle and takes your wallet out the back for a quick wacking....

Chris - do you know exact case when K&N airfilter really done it? I keep hearing that it can happen, but i know lots of people who happy users (including meself), and i havent seen single one who got MAF failed b/c of that stuff, if used correctly. Only time when you really can screw MAF with K&N is when you done reoiling incorrectly.

And yes - dealerships dont like them and will tell you that they do mess with MAFs, b/c they cant charge you for yet another change of airfilter. But according to law if they forcing you to use particular brand - they shall provide you with one free of charge every time. So..

Sounds like running rich to me. Must be warranty....how many miles? Could be carbon fouling...or if not it soon will be!!!!! K&N is fine, don't over oil. Dealer says it's fine cos they want to charge a full valve job later on!!!
(Sorry....how cynical of me)
