98 Disco 1. Recently had trouble starting truck shortly after installing new Ecu. Would turn over for 10-15 seconds without starting. If I left the key in the "on" position for 30 seconds then turned it on it would start. Took truck into dealer for routine service and they have come back saying they now can't start the vehicle and that the wires to the pump are corroded thus requiring new fuel pump and link harness. Two questions 1. Is this a common problem on disco's of this vintage (how do you prevent the corrosion) 2. Can the fuel pump be repaired rather than replacing it? Quote is 424$cdn for pump and 54 for harness +120.00 labour.

Same problem here... I just had pump, filter, fuses completed and it starts but the fuel pump cuts out!

I have asked people on the board Robert and Joey are very knowledgeable.

My truck is a 95 disco 1 - this is common - Rover told me that they replace the pump now with a new pump requiring a new harness vs the old pump (because of problems)

I purchased a used pump - for 150.00 from Rover Land (delivered) I know they have a other years available for $135. + s/h

Unforntantlely my fuel pump is fine - it has to be in the wires or ECU for me? Good Luck

Jordan,

There are several options for fuel pump issues on your D1.
I replaced out my worn out fuel pump a month ago on my '96 with a Carter from NAPA and have had no problems.

I've not heard of requiring a new harness and pump to correct corroded wires! The wires issue is not uncommon as the top of the tank is exposed to the elements at the wire connection area.

There are only 2 wires for the pump and two for the fuel level sensor. If the wires to your pump are corroded, just splice in new wires at the corroded area.

You REALLY don't need to replace the pump and harness to rectify the problem. Your dealer may be stroking you on the fix.

Email me directly if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Shawn (in Alberta)

Shawn, dealer says the wires that go directly into fuel pump are completely corroded(they say the connection that is actually in the fuel pump itself is not repairable and new pump needed. I guess I should relly locate another place to check my truck. Difficult in Ottawa. Not alot of people want to deal with a land rover.

That is kind of weird as the wires that connect directly to the pump are inside the tank and therefore not exposed to the elements. Hmmm

The connection on the pump itself is a simple 2 wire plug. I can see how if it was corroded, it would not be repairable as it is integral to the pump.

In the Tech section go to the Parts Cross Reference. I bought the Carter P74006 pump at a local parts place for $105CDN. The plug on the pump was identical to the LR one in my '96- It just plugged right in. It also came with some spare wires that are terminated with connections that could have replaced the ones to the pump. My wires were OK, so I discarded the new ones but this might solve your problem on both ends and save you $500!

It kind of depends how much you are willing to do on your own. Getting the fuel pump swapped is very straightforward, and is a one-person job for a morning task. I used a tech article online to walk me through the job- I can find it if you are interested in doing the work yourself. Simple hand tools and patience are all you need.

You should try and find out if there is an independant shop which has LR experience around- you'll save an enormous amount of $. If you see any Series rigs around, chat up the owners and ask if they recommend anyone.

Your option may also be let them change on the proviso its corroded then have a looke yourself to confirm.
