just had a terrible accident in my RR. guy in a Caddy pulled directly out in front of me in an intersection. hit him going about 40-45mph on the front passenger side. ripped off the fenders, hood, and the top half of his engine.

the RR front driver's wheel was pushed back under my floorboard. the radius arm was snapped in half, the driveshaft is bent and disconnected from the front diff., the frame is buckled in 2 places. lots of other body and suspension damage.

amazing thing other than I didn't get hurt other than almost bitting my tongue off, is the driver's door opened! as do all the other doors! the ARB definately did its job and basically launched me over the caddy. it also probably caused the frame to buckle due to the force.

so, the RR is probably toast as the steel body frame also is twisted.

hate to see a good Rover end in this manner.

no question that we'll be buying another one!!

Jamie

Sorry about your RR. I had a simular accident on Oct 9th 1999, but not as bad. It replayed over and over again in my mind.

At least you won't have to deal with a body shop.

Glad to see you're OK Jaime. Now you can get a new RR and set it up just the way you want it. What happened to the other driver?

the other driver was not wearing the safety belt and strap plus the airbag had been removed. he collapsed the steering column, hit his head on the windshield, and basically was out for the count of 2 minutes. many cuts and bruises. not a pretty site as he was taken to the hospital.

It's amazing how many people get in the car and decide not to put on there seatbelt. It's not like the things are extremely uncomfortable, or annoying. Some people must be ignorant and think "it will never happen to me," then it does.

Glad you're OK. Anything you can walk away from...

I've stopped being amazed by stupidity over the years. Maybe half the people who get in accidents are wearing seat belts. One of the first things I do at an accident is count the stars on the windshield, and make sure I've got ambulances coming for that many.

Especially in a body-on-frame vehicle like a Rover, wear your seat belt! A Rover doesn't have 'crumple zones' to absorb some of the force of an accident. This is often a good thing. But if you hit the steering wheel at speed, your chest is going to be like Jello with chunks where the ribs used to be. Please don't ask me how I know that. And by the way, the air bag only helps with the first impact. If you roll or go down an embankment, it's deflating by the time you hit the second or third hard spot.

Ian makes a couple of excellent accident-related points here, not the least of which is the reminder that "...the airbag only helps with the first impact." This is a CRUCIAL fact that virtually everyone ignores (or possibly doesn't know?). That "pillow" is gone nearly as quick as it appears, and we all know too well that accidents START with the initial impact. They don't end there. Thanks, Ian.

thanks Alan for the pics. as you can see the ARB really saved me. it was like "Big Foot" being launched over the Caddy. actually the front wheel is further forward from the placement on the ground vs where it really was which is under the driver's footwell.

as I mentioned earlier, just amazing that my door still opened!

the bits and pieces under it are the remains of the Caddy's hood and fender!

insurance has claimed it a total loss so parts maybe up for sale. RPI4.6 and transmission are staying with me. Alan has first dibs on the frt and rear ARBs. Rest - we'll see whats left after I get my "new" RR.

Really a sad ending for "Lucky".

Those pictures make me want to cry. Sad to see such a nice rig ruined. Just keep looking forward to setting up the new RR.

thx Matt - my feeling exactly.

shouldn't be a problem Aaron as the interior was in very good shape with 99% of the stuff present.

How badly damaged is the ABR bumper? Might be able to cut the sides off it and make a nice custom bumper with the center winch mount. Was your rover built by ECR? Thought I saw one similar to it on their website. I took a long look at my Range Rover (similar looking) and then thought about how many times I've almost had situations like that. Glad to hear you're ok. Have fun with the new Rangie.
