I am going to replace my TT in the rear with a DL. This means stock half-shafts need to be addressed. Several alternatives are available, but I was wondering if anyone in the DiscoWeb crowd had experience with either having a custom set made or used the slow-heat then cryogenic cycling for stock axles?
I know the cost of new upgraded shafts and they are expensive, ouch.
I don’t know if anyone has had a custom fabricator create a replacement set and what are the costs compared to purchasing the typical upgraded set for what, $600 or so?
Also, slow-heat(flame) then cryogenic cycling on stock axles, increased tensile strength, yes, but enough to be sure you don’t snap and possibly grenade the DL?

Any experiences would be certainly welcome.

Bruce, cost of upgraded rear one for D1 is actually around 400, and presumably on of the best bods where you can get custom ones is "Toms Wood Driveshafts" (you can find link in tech section about installation). I am still waiting on them to give me quote (sent email couple days ago), as i am upgrading to rear ARB and in need of driveshaft thingy too.

i would imagine custom axels would be very expensive, considering you are only making one set.

the cryo and heat treat i think would'nt help the situation. imagine the axels were made from lead. cast some voodoo on them with the ice and fire and they might be stronger but still not strong enough.

make it bigger DIA and from better material and then do the voodoo and you have the maxidrive axels GBR sells.

Some good discussions on this on the POR board actually and some alternative axles (as yet unproven) to the usual MaxiDrive and Ashcroft.

Some seem to have had good luck with cryo on stock axles - as long as huge tire sizes are not involved (ie: 32" and under)

Personally, I'd run the Maxidrive since with the Detroit you stand a chance of losing that if an axle breaks.


Segei - I think you're mixing up halfshafts and driveshafts. Halfshafts go inside the axles and drive the hubs. Driveshafts come from the Tcase and drive the pinion gears.

Don't you mean the half shafts from the diff to the wheel?

Oh you mean axle upgrade, not driveshaft...

northwestparts.com got two versions as well then.

Bruce, I don't know much about different types of metals and treatments or what LR did to the stock axles.

peaco.com makes alot of custom parts for imports, mainly for scca racing. Most of the parts are reasonably priced as well.

They used to have an ad in their catalog that said they can make custom axles for just about anything if you send in your old one for them to reference. This includes titanium axles (which I did'nt see mentioned on their website, but its in the catalog)that is supposed to be twice as strong and half the weight of steel ($$$$). Maybe they can make the axles out of something else that will be stronger than stock but cheaper than Ti. Just a thought.

Maxi shafts are the $600 set. wow. Hell for a few more bucks you can get Titanium shafts.
Moser engineering makes custom shafts that many of the racing shops in my area recommend, their price is half that of Maxi.
Cryo, well, I think this simply addresses wear and not tensile strength so I am still searching.
I knew it sounded too cheap to be true...
