Ok, the story......yesterday I go out in the morning and when I start my disco the battery seemed a little weak, but it started. I didn't think anything of it. I drove aprox. 30 miles shut the car off, it sat still for about 10 minutes, then when I came back it wouldn't start. I had a battery charger there so I jumped it, and came back home. Thinking it was a bad battery (which had been in there since new) I go by an optima at auto zone and throw it in there. Truck still won't start, so I hook up a battery charger (not the same one as before) and trickle charge it for an hour while I was out, come back still no luck! I was able to get it started by jumping it with another car, after which I let it idle for about 25 minutes, shut it off, wont start!!

I hooked up a volt meter on the terminals while it was running and it read 14+ volts, because I was thinking maybe the altenator was gone.

So now I am kind of stumped, can anyone give me a way to test the altenator, or does anyone have any other ideas. During my searches on discoweb I have seen some discussions about grounding straps going bad, is this a possibility?

Oh yeah mine is a 2000 DII, and I am not getting any kind of warning lights on the dash.

Thanks
-Stuart

stuart,
my 96 D1 has an ignition kill override mounted on the firewall. disconnecting (over very low power) the battery triggers this feature of the alarm. not sure if the newer discos still use this option.
FWIW.

When you say it will not start, by this do you mean that the starter will not turn over or the motor will not start even with starter going?

If the starter will not turn over, then you have a bad starter.

If you are getting 14+ volts with the engine running, then your altenator should be fine.

Thanks for the help guys, but it turned out to be a loose connection on one of the battery cables....I guess the connection able to pull enough current to start the motor, but once it was running, maybe the altenator was taking over and keeping the electrical system alive. But I got it straightened out. Thanks again though.
