I've noticed that my RPM's are around the 2200 mark at highway speeds (100 kmh), which I think is a tad high, as my truck is about 1750 at same speed.

Without going to a lift kit, as I'd prefer to keep the COG low, whats the tallest tires anyone has put on a stocker Discovery? It doesnt look like a lot of room in those wells, but I think I could likely get away with another inch or so in height.

TIA

Thats ok, did a bit of searching and by the sounds of it I may be able to fit 235-75's in there. I usually buy my tires at Costco anyway and they are pretty particular about only putting on tires that their charts show for the vehicle...

cheers

Glen,
I have actually slapped in 245/75-16 Pirelli Scorpion A/Ts on my '98 DI here in Saudi. Even though I am a fan of OME and have a truck on 35s and so forth, I too prefer the lowest center of gravity for sand runs. Plus this truck is a DD more than a TR.
Note that you'll need to chop a lot of the rear fenders and front plastic side bumperettes, which is not an issue to me. Also, my suspension is sagging (stock since 1998), and even with the sway bars, at full articulation there is a WEE bit of contact. I plan on using either newer LR springs or a 10mm OME packer on all four, also to recompensate for the front winch.
Goodluck

Glen,

Don't kid yourself about keeping the cog low. When you fill up the arches with bigger tires, it will look like its bloated and laden with 2 tons of junk. Lifting it a couple of inches will make it look much more balanced and help out with the rubbing.

Glen, FWIW I put 245/70-16s on my D1 with out any lift, cutting or rubbing. I have BFG ATs.

I've looked at the tire chart .. but my question is, is that tire chart and remarks about rubbing have to do with trucks doing serious offroading, or is that in general driving?

What I mean is, what size of tire can people get away with on a grocery getter that doesn't have to worry about maximum articulation? :-)

I have a 97 D1 with Goodyear M/T 245 75's and no lift. The tires will rub if I go off road. Around town not a problem. I did have to adjust the turning stops. Plans are to add a little lift when I can find time. The Goodyear M/T's look great and ride fine on the road.

"looking" is not for Rovers :-)
running 245/75s at 10psi in the desert is MUCH more stable than running 265/75s with teh same pressure with the 2" lift.

If it's a grocery getter that does not go off road, why do you want to get bigger tires to begin with? The only thing it will buy you is even shittier acceleration than what you have now.

Acceleration? I've heard of it. Unfortunately our Disco hasn't. 2200 sounds right.

It came as a dealer option on some pre 95 models, I think....
