I would like to put larger wheels/ tyres on a discovery, and realise 235.85x16 isnt that much work, but I am tempted to put 255.85x16 on.

The question is how involved is fitting this size?
I have them on a 110 at the moment, which go straight on after a lift.

how much lift is on your disco?

it takes about 3" plus some rigging with the the fenders and trimming in the back. you might also have an issue the the tire rubbing on the back door

ways around this include relocating upper a arm and longer trailing arms.

might need new rear drive shaft too.

since you have the tires there toss 'em on and let US know the issues you see.

i put a set of these tires on a 99 D1, and other that the steering stop adj. and the usual rear quarter trimming, that's all it took. we've stuffed the tires on all 4 corners and no additional corrections were needed. in addition,
this truck has a 3" lift and a long travel rear shock setup, but no lengthened trailing arms, a-arm relo. driveshaft etc...were needed.
i personally think this is the best size tire for these vehicles. but you're limited to a mud terrain style tire, (BFG doesn't make the AT-KO's in this size.) just over 33" and looks sweet!!!!

2" lift here is acceptable, but unfortunately 3" lift would get the authorities flapping and screaming here.
Looks like Ill settle on 235.85x16 then :-(

I have a 95 Disco with the 255-85s and second Marc's opinion. The tires fit well with minor adjustments and give the truck some extra lift as well.

I have a rovertym 3" lift and 1" spacers on my 98' D1 and with sliders, winch, front bumper I had to trim a lot off the front and rear to fit 255's. The tires vary in size quite a bit from one manufacturer to another so keep that in mind too. The trxus 255 is a wee bit smaller than a bfg and I'm sure others will vary as well. When I first put them on I trimmed very little but under heavy articulation you will find you need to trim a lot more. My tires also hit a little behind the rear doors but only enough to leave little black marks. I do like em' so get out your dremel and masking tape and have at it. I have some pics under -Perry Miller.

What springs and shocks are you crazy guys using???
I was Thinking of OME with Decarbon shocks for 235.85 (works on my 110).
But to get a 3" lift???
Its also a question of parts availability here in Norway, aswell as having to have the vehicle approved with the modifications by the Ministary of Transport...:-(

But Im still tempted, Help will I never be satisfied :-) :-) :-)

Good luck with a 3" lift in Norway. The ministry of transport can be a bunch of a..es if they want to. Although you (obviously) own a British vehicle, you can try contacting ACCN (American Car Club of Norway - they produce the magazine "Amcar"). They have had great success in getting hot rods and street rods approved (in addition to all other sorts of vehicles), and knows the rules and regulations very well.

HAve you altered the gearing at all on your vehicles.
Surely a switch from 205 to 255 alteres the gearing, and must cause problems even for a V8,

Quenten, we are not crazy. There are a lot of people running 3"+ lifts over here. Typically people run green monsters, rovertym or OME with spacers to get 3". Some people mopd gears, others don't. Certainly with anything > 33" means you will lose power.

Quenten,
I run this size on a 200 Tdi 3 door disco. With only a 2" lift it required some cutting of the guards but not all that much.
I have since changed to defender high range gearing but a change to 4.1 diff ratio would do the job also.
Since you all ready have them put them on and grab the tin snips.

Hmmmm........

Jeff here in town had a 2" lift on his '97 when he had 245/75s.... he decided on 255/85 instead of 235/85s, when it was time for new tires...

He had to add a 2" body lift to his 2" springs, then he had to add trailing arms to keep the rear axle out of the backedge of the rear doors. And he breaks axles regularly now, on stock diffs. And it's as fast as a school bus.

I'd go with 235/85s, if it was me.

I'm with Leslie on this one go with a regular lift, 235/85s. Add a locker and you probably have a rig capable (drivers being equal)of 80 plus percent of what the most extreme rigs can do at very low cost....
