Hi,

I read some posts mentioning the possibility of driving home with a broken front drive shaft by using the CDL and it sparked my interest. I have a 1996 Discovery and was wondering if anyone has ever seen a conversion for the Discovery giving the option to drive in RWD when desired, yet shift to 4wd when needed. It seems like it would save some mpg. I use the Disco as my daily driver and just wanted to know if it would be possible. Would the CDL be subjected to abnormal abuse by driving around with it constantly locked for a powered rear and unpowered front, if it was possible?
A second question I have concerns the check engine light. My light recently came on when a radiator hose sprung a leak. I fixed this but can't get the light to go off. I tried disconnecting the battery overnight, but it stayed on. I took it to autozone and they read the OBD-II for codes and it says "no codes". Anyone experienced similar?

Thanks for any info,
Jarrod King

BCB offroad has a kit that goes in the transfercase that can change the permanent 4wd to rwd and then, once you shift into "locked", you're back to the 50/50 split forward aft.

Jarrod, I think you'll be splitting hairs by trying to save gas by going to a part-time 4wd conversion. First, you'd need to convert the transfer case, then you'd need to install free-wheeling or "locking' hubs on your front axle. If you don't convert the front axle, then you're still turning everything in that front axle, so the conversion would only prevent the front driveshaft from being spun.

I recently drove around for two weeks with no front drive shaft. The handling was noticeably different. ALOT more understeer, which I didn't care for. And NO noticeable difference in my fuel mileage. You need to remember that you're using a 4.0 liter engine to push around a 5K lb plus vehicle that has the aerodynamics of a brick.

You ever heard the expression "You can't get blood from a stone"?

Jarrod,
I think the best way to get the mileage you want is to lay off the skinny pedal, make sure everything you have is working properly and most effeciently, reduce any weight you can (got any cinder blocks in the back for no reason?), check and inflate/deflate tires to the appropriate pressure, and then acclimate yourself to the fact that you drive a "pig". But, atleast your DI can go where no Honda Hybrid can, and come on, who would win in a wreck!

Hello,

Thanks for all the responses. It is the check engine light that won't go away. Greg, thanks for the info about no increase in gas mileage when you were in 2wd; if the mpg was not significant, maybe I should abandon this idea.

come on guys... complaining 'bout gas...
gas is always going to be bad when your driving a vehicel that is not aerodynamicly conformed.then theres the weight as well 'n tires, blah blah blah
if you want to save gas get a different means of transpertation.
pls excuse my spelling its late. ;)
