Tire sizes on 7J or 8J x 16 alloys

The LR owners manual state 235/70/16 on 7Jx16 or 255/65/16 on 8Jx16s. And what does the "J" stand for? I understand that the "7" and "8" is the width of the wheel. Also any opinions on Big O tires? The salesman said they were manufactured by GY. I've heard horror stories on the GYs.
