I'm thinking of ditching the Disco and picking up an ancient, el-cheapo 5-door Series to play with and use as my daily driver.

yeah, I could fit more of those snow-removal laborers in the back of a 109.....

I look at this:
109

and imagine this:
110

funny.......at Uhwarrie this past weekend we pretty much convinced a series owner to get a Discovery. one trail ride was all it took. none of this trailering stuff.
though i would love to have a series as my commuter in town and trail truck for nearby stuff.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Nice dream Blue. There's no such thing as a cheap series, no matter what you pay for it ;-)

I wheeled with that 110 last year fresh from delivery from ECR. It was very nice. The guy was a total newbie but didn't seem fazed by the fact that we got out of the woods at 3:30am in February in Northern Maine. Cold? Yout bet. Best guess (from someone who had an ECR 110) was $115,000 for your dream truck above.

Me, I'm going the other way. I've got a series 88 (still for sale) and am planning to get a cheap Disco when it sells.

Blue, keep your disco AND buy the Series. I got a Series 3 109" soft top (ultimate teenager mobile) and it died on me about 3 weeks ago. I've been working on it pretty much the whole time, and it still won't move out of my driveway. If you can do this, then ok. Go for it.

Another option is to sell the disco, and get an American truck and a series. I have a 88 GMC pick-up truck that really kicks butt on the road. It can haul anything (including that series) and the 350 engine is a little rocket. Not to mention it is fairly comfortable and the long bed allows room for anything.

The only reason I drive that right now is b/c my Series won't work. If you want a reliable 5 door truck, then it is a 110.

What kind of driving do you do? If it is only 5 miles to work (only 3 miles to school for me), then the series is bearable. If you are going across town, you'll be tired when you show up for work!! Do you live in the mountains? Then be prepared to pull over and let others by about every 5 miles. Any long road trips? The series is fine for about 4 hours (you older guys might not last that long j/k :)), but after about 5 1/2 hours of straight driving, it gets very tiring.

In review (sorry, we do "reviews" in school, it is permenentally branded in my brain), the series is a great toy, but not a great daily driver for the people that are on schedules.

Just my 2 cents...

Blue,

To steal a line from Ho: Just do it!

If you have to sell the Disco to make it happen...big deal. You can always get another if things don't work out.

In my experience, life sucks if you are left wondering "what if..."

Okay okay okay......

Confession time......

:)

I told people I saw in person at Uwharrie, but hadn't said so here, so....

My Disco is now gone.

I took it, and the wife's crappy Aspire, and traded them in on two new Subaru Imprezas the week-before-last.

I didn't like her crappy car, and, my Disco payment was kinda high (!!!). And, I'm doing about 100mi/day round-trip to and from work. Instead of having the wife drive around in a crappy car anymore, I decided to get her a new one. But, I couldn't really buy her a new one AND keep the Disco, too.

As it turns out, the payment on the 2 new cars isn't a lot more than it was on just the one Disco, and, the savings in gas will easily make up the difference. AND, I don't have to listen to her complain about her car, or worry about it breaking down on her again, the way it had a habit of doing.

She now has a new silver Outback Sport, and I have a new blue 2.5 RS sedan (think WRX, but w/o the turbo). Gotta admit, the thing is a HOOT to drive, and gets double the gas-mileage that the Disco did.

Yes, I miss the Disco. Now, though, I can turn my attention the my Series, which had been neglected because of the Disco. I'm gonna get on it after Laura gets out of school at the end of the month (she's a teacher, and is worn out in the evenings, so, if I wait til summer break, she won't mind as much of me spending my time working on the Rover instead of helping out inside).

However! I WILL have another Disco. I have BIG plans for a Disco. It's just I was paying too much for that Disco to follow through with these plans with it.

A big part of it was, Laura didn't want me to do ANYTHING to that Disco. No lift, no winch, no roofrack, etc., etc. All the things I had planned, I couldn't follow-through with. But, if I can pick up a cheap Disco in a year or so, then, well..... I can have fun w/ it the way I wanted to with the one that just left.

So.......

Now you all know......

:)

Bill, I'm going to disagree with Max. The Series, if maintained and in good order, is reliable. I run mine daily. Anywhere from 10~100 miles per day on average. A few 400 mile road trips, etc. A lot of freeway miles and that fun bumper to bumper LA traffic. The only hiccups are caused by me taking the truck down to change/modify/fix/correct things. The one time the truck left me DOA was for 5 hours when the electrics fried at Truckhaven. The 110 that got hit by the Lucas gremlin at the last Truckhaven was in a scarier boat then I was in that regard. I was also down for a bit after the roll over, but anyone would have been as well. Especially while I waited for parts to arrive. I think I spent 50% of my time waiting for UPS to deliver.

That being said, they are HIGH maintainace/upkeep vehicles, but you can't expect a 35+ year old truck that is run daily not to be. You can go without a lot of the maintainace, but it will bite you on the ass later. You'll spend a few hours each week tweaking with something. Nothing earth shattering, but they are not drive and forget trucks.

Are they cheap? No. But then again, I haven't heard of any Disco owners who use their trucks off road that haven't been spared the $ hits either. How much will it cost to fix a broken D1 axle? What will it cost you if you put your D1 on its side off road? Will it drive home? How much will your exhaust manifold cost to replace? There are no O2 sensors on my IIA and no quirky MAF sensors either. As everyones Discos go up in mileage and get used off road, they will start showing their age. I am certain my '65 IIA was easier to keep going in 1975 then it is now.

In a perfect world, Lisa would have her Disco, I'd have my IIA, and we'd have a nice run about (maybe a 2002 Cooper ) as well. In reality, both our trucks are paid for, but both get lousy gas mileage (the Disco and my IIA get similar mileage) and both are higher maintaince then regular rides. The Disco is nice for hauling the family around, the SWB IIA is not. I miss the radio, cruise control, A/C, comfortable seats, etc. However, I get a rag top, seat of the pants drive that is hard to get anywhere else. Everything is a trade off.

If your D1 is paid for, keep it and get cranking on the 109. You'll be able to park it and fix it up nicely. If you're dumping the D1 to pay for the 109, think about picking up a cheap run about in as well (at least for short term) to keep yourself mobile.

Series trucks are nice, but they are a labor of love. They are maintaince and time hogs. Keep that in mind in relation to work and your family.

Have fun.

Jeff

Oh, and Bill, your 109 will probably wind up costing as much as you get out of your Disco by the time you get it going.... ;-)

The White Whale must have heard me....this morning the anti-lock dash light is staying on and she's vibrating like a cheap electric razor from 65 to 70 mph. I'm being punished for my insolence. Guess I'll keep her and continue to dream about a Series. Of course, there is a sweet FJ40 for sale right down the street from me........

Ok, I think maybe this is the moment and thread to pose a question for you, Blue ...

Do you want to join a "TSW" crew of 5 (so far, Brian, Jeff, possibly Greg,) June 22nd, in the Camp Pendleton Mud Run? (It will take your mind off this for awhile, and you won't need a Disco, Series, or an FJ40! :)) They're in it for the fun, i.e. laugh with and at each other ...

Kim, this isn't just another sad excuse for Californians to get naked in the mud, is it? If it is, well then....I'm there....

If you want to drive farm equipment, then at least get a capable tractor :)
