how can i tell if i have a faulty thermostat? the engine has been really cool lately. temp only seems to go up when i am running the ac and even then just below half way. i briefly spoke w/ roverland and he sugested faulty thermostat...how can i check for this or other potential problems....

Take the thermostat out and put it in a pan of water slowly heting up.
Measure the temp, and note when it opens.
Then check versus the manual.
If it opens too quickly, get a new one....

Just buy a new one and gasket. If faulty sometimes doesnt show in the water test.
Tip: when putting in new or old back in use contact adhesive drops to hold in place before putting elbow back on. Many drop down and cause leak during reinstall.

Yah, you got a stuck thermostat. 190 degree F for small block chevy. I pulled my old one out and took it with me to Auto Zone to match it up. Don't worry about the rattle valve it will work fine without one.
