If I engage the CDL with a 10mm wrench (1/4 turn clockwise), and the CDL dash light does not come on, does it mean that the CDL is not working? Or could it be that there is a malfunction in the electronic signal that controls the dash light?

The CDL may not engage if there is wind-up between front and rear driveshafts, so your light may not be engaging for this reason.

This problem drove me insane when tuning my CDL solenoid.

My solution was to try rolling the truck to level, even ground, then try reengaging the CDL nipple. If that did not work, I rolled forward about 20 feet, then tried again. If that still didn't work, I rolled the truck backwards and tried again. This usually works.

This is why the internal CDL mechanism is so attractive. The prospect of my playing musical chairs with my Disco was not gonna become reality.

Kenny,

Engage the CDL and then drive a little, it will come on. It will only come on immediately about half the time on my truck, it depends on the orientation of the locker.

Thanks guys,

I was thinking that something similar to what you both described might be a possibility. I should have known better when my son tried to tell me that it won't engage until you put the car in gear. I was contradicting him though because my first few experiences with the CDL were that - as soon as you engage, the light comes on and all is well. Not totally true I suppose...

Anyway, I'm still working on the poor man's linkage system that mounts under the passenger seat and has to be engaged from the outside. I really like the solenoid approach, but I'm strapped for cash as usual!

You can find all the measurements necessary for a poor man's CDL handle on my website at:

www.chrisurquieta.com

Just follow the link to my Land rover pages. you can use a piece of flat plate and a shelf bracket and have the whole thing running for about $20.

Kenny,

I have the same as what you are doing now. It's much better if you install an interruptor switch in the cabin that cuts out the CDL sensor (and hence light) while you start the engine. I can tell you which cable to intercept if you want. Its one of the three you can reach from the driver's side underneath. Cable can run through one of the rear seat bolt holes for now.

If you don't do this you will have to get out, disengage, get in, drive a little, turn off, turn on, get out, engage, get back in lol.... and THAT is a real pain.

I am having the same problem getting the light to come on. Have tried everything. At MAR I just engaged the CDL and assumed it was on even though the light NEVER lit up. I was told that in SOME D2's the wire was never connected to the CDL for the indicator light. One of the things on my list to investigate is if the wire is connected at all. Dean, perhaps you can illuminate me as to where that wire might be? Thanks!

Rans,

Oki lock the CDL, and make sure the light comes on. Then climb under and unplug each of the three small (2-wire connectors). One of them will cause a transmission light to come on, one will extinguish the CDL locked light. The other does nothing AFAICS.

The one that extinguishes the CDL light you can cut into it and put a switch in the cabin. I just got a temporary switch on the end of a loose wire.

I don't really care about the light, I'd rather it didn't come on at all actually! As long as I remember to unlock when I hit tarmac then its ok.

Dean, I think you missed my point, I cannot get the light to come on, I'm afraid the wire is not connected and I'm not sure where to look for it?

I'll have a check next time I climb underneath. Until then I think you can assume it locks can't you? Test it by driving on some gravelly road turn around you will hear/feel it binding up.

The shop manuaa l may have a diagram too.

Dean,

Thanks for those tips. I have fabricated something similar, but I still need to anchor it a bit. Also, I think if I had a drill press, I could get more accurate on the 10mm oval cut.

It turns out that my CDL has been engaging as described by the others above, it just takes a few seconds for the light to respond.

I really like the feeling of being locked like that, much better climbing and churning through muddy ruts.

FWIW - on my 2000 dII, when I installed the linkage for my CDL my light wasn't coming on at all either. Turned out that the little pin switch that is in the top of the transfer case, which sends the CDL signal, had a nut threaded around it so that it wasn't sitting deep enough in the transfer case. I took the nut out and through some washers on there to get the right spacing and then it worked perfectly.

Dean, I engaged it at MAR, or at least I thought I did, can't say I could tell the difference.

Stuart, I'll check that when I get home tonight...sounds like a possible!!

Thanks Tommy, got the email!
