This is the 3rd thread that I've submitted asking basically the same question, but now I have more details. I have an opportunity to trade (straight-up) my wife's 2000 Mercury Cougar w/ 55k miles for a 1995 Discovery w/ 135k miles. My main concern is the mileage. I was told that it was a one-owner corporate vehicle. I'm not sure if that is good or bad. I have pictures of it, and it is extremely clean (inside & out) and looks well maintained. We're trading in my 2002 Jeep Liberty on a new Mazda for her, which means I'm stuck trying to get rid of her Cougar. I'm considering a Disco because I want a capable trail rig, but also a decent daily driver. What are some reasons I should buy the '95 Disco and a few reasons I should not buy it? Thanks for any suggestions. Steve

95 Disco are easy to work on. I have 107,000 miles on my rig. And still going strong.

I have a 97 Disco with 143k and its just fine. I actually like it better than my previous 93 RRC LWB. Try to get some kind of service/ maintenance history on it, that would be best. Good luck with your decision. ! BTW the most you should pay for that Disco is 5500.

I have a 95 D1 with 118k on it. Should you buy it? Sure, it can be a great truck. Mine gets 17mgp highway and runs great on and offroad. But a vehicle history would be a very good idea. Land Rovers in general need lots of maintence, it makes them run forever, but if the previous owner didn't take care of the truck , you'll be in for lots of headaches. If you can't get a good vehicle history, take it to a dealer or good independant LR mechanic. Get a pre-purchase inspection done. The truck might be fine, but with the mileage on it now expect a possible Altenator, fuel pump, radiator core, waterpump, rotoflex might need replaced soon, if they haven't been already. Also the window regulators need lubed and the window ecu might need fixed. These issues are well documented here on Dweb so fixes and advice are availible. With that mileage any car could have these issues, so don't let my list scare you to much. Being a corporate vehicle might mean they had a maintence plan, that could mean your truck is truely a good find. Rovers are like subaru's, they either last forever and are loyal friends, or they are big pieces of crap and your worst enemy.

i don't know steve,
i'd question that Andy guys advice.
if i had a nickle for every time that he's said that he was gonna sell "ole red" i'd be sittin' on easy street. lol (nuttin' but love andy)
if you can afford the extra money, i'd go with a 98-99, but i'm really biased.
consider this, rovers are enthusiast vehicles. and you really have to be enthusiastic about how much work you will be doing to them.
if you like to tinker and are capable then have at it. but remember, it's not a honda.

Marc's right, I have a love hate relationship with mine. This spring when the fuel pump went bad, the brake caliper siezed, the alternator went south, I wanted to get rid of it in a bad way. But I calmed down and realized I put 18k a year on it for the last 3 years, so I should be happy with how little went wrong compared with other vehicles I owned with just as much mileage. Its true about being an enthusist car, I guess when it breaks down I end up feeling like it's a friend who lets me down. I really need to work on grasping reality in reguards to my discovery. If I where to get a new truck today I'd look for a cherry 98-99, but for now I like my "friend" so I'll keep it. Marc- How about you pay my wifes grad school bills for a while, then I could afford to keep her audi and my rover. :-) Most of the time when I want to sell it, it isn't because of break downs, its because I'm poor right now from those school bills. Rovers are not super cheap to own, parts, gas, maintence are not on the level of say a Honda Civic. Of course a Civic is void of personality or kind any fun to drive feeling, also they suck offroad ...

Actually Marc, you tell my wife she needs to get rid of her A4 so i can keep the rover. I suggested that plan and it didn't go over well at all. :-( Don't worry, next semester when the bills are due I'll be asking you again if you know anyone interested in buy a red 95 d1 ... lol

if you are paying 5500 or less and it is clean - maybe. Look for leaks and rust on the metal parts, and drive it with the radio off.

Make sure you test the Hi-Lo and Diff Lock, usually on vehicles that have not been used off-road this units lock up and don't work. Other than that get a Car History usually at this milage the car should have gotten a few parts changed or fixed, also have it looked over by a LR mechanic. My 95 has given me problems but it's running good for now!!!!
