I've seen some discussion, but none too detailed, on how to wire up dual batteries. Can anyone point me to a good source of detailed info discussing the pros and cons of various different methods including the use of charging controls etc. I've seen the discussion on EE, was looking for more detail.
Thanks.

Hey Rans,

Check this out http://www.landroverstuff.com/odyssey.htm

The real debate is whether or not to wire them in parallel or use a isolator. I haven't done it yet so I can't say, but I'm curious about this topic as well, and have been doing my own research. Good Luck

John...

If you wanted to get real tricky you could:
run the auxilliary battery via a solenoid and oil pressure switch combo so the second battery would be isolated unless the engine was turned on. This would eliminate the possibility of draining the second battery while the engine is off. If you rigged up a manual override switch you could start the engine using both batteries.

I just installed an optima redtop as a secondary winch/light battery with a Warn 150 amp isolator.
This setup is in a '95 D1 with the second battery on the driver side in front of the airbox. The Isolator installed next to the washer tank on the passenger side. I powered the isolator with a lead off the positive side of the coil. Since you haven't indicated what model Disco you are in, I assume you have allocated space for the battery and the Isolator.

The other way, avoiding a pressure switch off the oil is wiring through a solenoid and switching off the ignition. The second battery drops out in the 'Acc' & 'on' positions of the key and comes back in when the in the 'start' position. So basically you are only cranking off the main battery but they are in parallel when the engine is running (both batteries charging & running accessories in parallel) When the ignition is off the solenoid switches and only runs the Aux battery through it. Or at least this is how I think it goes.

I use the Surepower seperators for the last 10 years on 4 vehicles from ARB. Never any batt probs. Easy to wire up.http://www.surepower.com/Products/batsep.asp

check:
http://www.hellroaring.com
we use these exclusively on multiple battery applications for over the road trucks, specialized airport equipment, personal trucks...
the site gives all the pros and cons to all dual battery systems.
hooking batteries in parallel give you more cranking amps, but the batteries will degrade at the same rate.
lots of opinions on this topic, most usually stem from budget.
