I am selling a car to someone in Maryland. I live in Minneapolis. We agreed on a price and I am planning on delivering the car (at his expense) on Friday to Maryland and then flying home. The buyer is going to send $1K via Paypal on Wednesday. The current plan is to exchange the car for a cashiers check and hop a plane home.

Everything seems to be on the up-and-up and I have no reason to distrust this guy. However, after driving 1000-miles I'm somewhat vulnerable. He has had the car inspected by a third party and is well aware of its condition. I'm just afraid that I'll show up on Saturday morning and he'll say I don't have all the money or he'll try to knock the price down with the knowledge that if I don't accept I have to turn around, for another 1000-miles of fun. At the same point, I understated that he is at risk if I'm misrepresenting the car.

Suggestions...

trust makes the world a better place

or send the truck via commercial transport service and have them pick up the check ,sign a contract up front that says if he denies delivery that the reurn trip is on him and that the deposit is forfeited.

but as I said before trust makes the world a better place...you may have allready made a new long term friend:-)

Ya, that's the road I was taking,. I am going to send him an email asking if he has any additional questions or wants pictures of anything else. I also planed on stating the terms of the deposit as non-refundable at the time I leave to deliver the truck.

It just seems that lately every time I don't cover my butt I get burned.

Gotta agree w/Thom on all points here. BTW, why take the risk to yourself and the vehicle of driving it to him? Another thousand miles of wear and tear plus all the ancillary risks that go along with the trip.

If he is going to give you a cashiers check when you get there, make sure it is not a bogus check. Have him give you the name of the bank issuing the cashiers check and call the bank after he gets the check to make sure it is good. Or you could go with him to the bank to get the check. Everything is probably going to be fine, just cover your butt, but I doubt he is going to give you a bogus check if he paypals you $1000. I just remember a local news story about people buying cars and giving the owners bogus cashiers checks.

Normally you have to have payment BEFORE releasing the vehicle so I would get the check first and make sure it clears. I have always been ok with a this clause when I was buying a truck.

Ron, that's what escrow services are for, if trust is in doubt.

Chad,
to echo what Ron L said-stay away from paypal. If something strikes their interest they will freeze the transaction and all of the sudden the money is in limbo where you have very little real ability to get it back until they are done "investigating" which happens at a blistering pace to say the least.

So if Paypal is a no go, what would be a good alternative.

I would do something like what Ron mentioned, and what I have done while buying, in that you get the $$$, in whatever format (bank transfer, cashiers check, etc) and make sure its legit and then transfer the title to the new owner. Its all a judgment call but 1000 miles is a long way to go to get jerked around.
When I sold my 300ZX we used paypal for a large deposit and that's where my hesitation and warning came from, they were a PITA although the money eventually cleared and everything was cool. Once I had all the money I fedex'd him the title and he ended up sending someone to drive the vehicle to him.
That being said we had communicated often, he was a former Marine, etc... so he trusted me and likewise on my part.
Contracts are a good thing in my eye, so are escrow services-just not paypal :-)
Hope it works out for you.

Chad,

There must be a reason as to why he would like YOU to drive the vehicle HE is buying from YOU. Just don't do it. If he wants the truck, make him at least meet you halfway. That shows that he is interested in what he has already seen.

I once attempted to deliver a race car to a guy 1200 miles away. My dually got about 10 MPG and I blew two enclosed trailer tires that took out part of the fender, surrounding sheetmetal and two wheels. I secured a 5K deposit on the car and it was agreed it was non refundable. He even sent the cashiers check to me overnight. Bottom line this was a 70K car he was purchasing for 25K. He attempted to negotiate a better deal with me when I got there. I closed the trailer door and left him in the parking lot. He thought for sure after my miserable trip I would give. FWIW this guy was a highly respectable individual who had seen the car perform weeks before its delivery (he lost to it).

I would not do Paypal except for a deposit. I would meet at a bank and walk away knowing the money is legit. Also would'nt shipping it be almost as cheap as your flying costs, driving costs/risks and all the time involved?

Tim
