Evening Sports Fans

Now since this is a truely international post, its only fair that the WORLD CUP RUGBY 2003 gets some kind of coverage.

Its been a great first week with all the dominant nations taking control, that was predictable. But it's the other, not so strong rugby nations that are battling it out at the bottom that are making the really tough ones to pick in this, the 5th WORLD CUP RUGBY.

For instence, tonight, Nambia - that tough little nugget left in S.W Africa by Germany after the 1st & 2nd WW's put in a bloody good run against Argentina, and losing by 50 odd points.

Having lived in Australia, South Africa and Australia again, I'm pretty Rugby bias. But with the USA involved as well, I can't believe that people so passionate about things British, that you wouldn't have jumped on the band wagon and rallied your team, behind your flag.

Come on guys, get behind something thats not so "world" as soccer, but a shitload more than "Gridiron"

Remember, rugby is about a bunch of guys getting togther, watching mates of theirs beat the crap out of each other while get p¡ssed watching them - having a good time.

All the best to all nations.

cheers

gtt

PS: I'm a SpringBok supporter

Greg,

The major problem the American's have is they don't have Roy and HG to explain the finer points of the game...the eye gouging, biting and proctological examinations.

At home, I have Cable Channel 140 that plays Premiere League Soccer and Rugby around the clock. Good Stuff. Our football here is more entertaining with the hotties on Fox and all the sideline BS. But International Soccer.....it's all about speed, skill, and a few yellow cards. :-) Then you got Rugby where I wonder if the players get pissed before the game or after the game.

David Beckham needs to have his British Citezenship revoked for going over to Real Madrid.

Go Man U!!

Maybe Beckham just wanted to play for a team with adult management. But I may be slightly biased..

Go Liverpool!

you know i wish pro rugby was more televised here. my brother played rugby for Yale years ago and i remember him telling me stories of his Ireland tours.
sure they beat the hell out of each other, but they always were very respectful of the rules and each other. after the games the teams met out at the pubs later that night and would BS about whatever. sportsmanship seemed to rank much higher than it does with other sports i see on tv. i.e. basketball, etc
i still play hockey on a regular basis and for the most part everyone can walk away at the end of the game and be civil. but there are still the assholes that can't deal with getting drilled into the boards, getting back up and skating off. they take it personally and will wait for the first cheap shot at you. oh well.
hockey still ranks up there as my favorite sport. a gentlemans sport with tough mother fuckers. :-)

Garth

you are so right!!

I reckon if the guys in the states had Roy & HG to encourage the kiddies of the world into getting into rugby, the world would be a happier place.

A bit of loving biffo goes a long way.

PS: as for soccer - have it!

I played throughout high school and college and miss it a lot. The reason that rugby is not more popular in the US is because it is not televised and promoted like the mainstream American sports. The reason it is not televised is because it is so continous there is no time for all the advertisments. Rugby players do not get a 30 second to two min. break for 10 seconds worth of action. We all no the world goes round with money.
Anyway, thanks for the update and good luck to all players.

You are absolutely right Matt!

I started playing when I was 12. Back then I used to play two games on the same day. I was a prop. I played up until I moved out of Queens, no teams up here in Rockland County, NY.

BTW, rugby is an amateur sport in most countries...most players are in it for the love of the sport and not the money.

Watched the New Zealand vs Italy match last night and the All Blacks are simply awsome, destroyed Italy by like 68-5. I too played in college for Oklahoma State University and miss playing along with the crazy after game/tournament parties. I played a wing position and sometimes full back. John, I once subed for our prop that got hurt, playing in the scrum was eye opening and I couldn't move for days after that.

Keep an eye out for the South Africa v's England on Saturday night in Perth, WA. I think that will be the best, and hardest fought game of the pre-finals series. Who ever wins that will avoid playing the All Blacks and Austalia in the quarters and the semi finals, hence it's importance.

I'll be over at a pommie friend's house with my Bokke jersy on and a skin full of p¡ss.

Enjoy

For all you Canadians the game against the All Blacks (New Zealand) has just started.

I can only uphold the long held Aussie tradition and support Canada.

I play rugby at Western Carolina University and i have to say its a blast. As for respect: yes there is a huge respect for the rules and the opposing team. When a team comes to play us, sure we beat the hell out each other on the field but after its over both teams go out and party like crazy. So there is a huge respect in the sport. As for pro rugby i also wish it was televised more. I watch it on Fox sports world a lot but even they don't have the coverage that i like to see aroudn the clock. Maybe some time soon we will see a full rugby channel.

I have 3 points to make that I can't relate to landrovers in any way.

1, Greg, Springboks, mmmmmm tastes like chicken.
2, Johnc, I have a lot of respect for the way Uraguay have played, those guys have serious balls.
3, Paul, Ian, Beckham = Pussy. Give me Gerrard any day.

The England -v- Wales match will be a good one, this will be one of the only times I will have split loyalties.

Glyn

Its more like turkey than chicken...

I was at the NZ v Wales game on Sunday. Boy oh boy was that a great game. I had to go buy a red Welsh cap so I could jump on the band wagon!!! What a shame. It would have been a real shame for the Bok's if England had to face the All Blacks instead Wales...

The Welsh play wonderful rugby on Sunday, just as the Irish did on Saturday.

Its crunch time this weekend though. Looking forward to plenty of hours in front of the box with a coldie in hand.

As fate would have it, I'll be flying into Sumatra next Friday and getting on a yacht sailing to Thailand, so I will miss all the semi's and the final. I won't know who has won the World Cup until 5th December. I have no say in this, it is my "pre-wedding" honeymoon (can't complain, it is a surf charter for two on a 58' catamaran.)

have a good weekend boys, may your teams do well (unless they are the All Blacks)

cheers

gtt

Well, I hate to say it...I'm English and as of the Saturday 22nd (the final) very proud to be. Not the best game of Rugby but nail biting!

The Aussies nearly stopped us!

To Greg Tearne, enjoy Sumatra. I used to work in Indonesia for four years. I went to Sumatra but was based in Borneo (Kalimantan).
