I've heard a lot of people say good things about Optima batteries. Check here for more info:

Hey Dave,
I have a 97 disco, and when my battery went dead I got an optima yellow top. They are great for lights, whinching, and there a dry cell battery that can be mounted anywhere or any position. They are pretty pricy, but I think there worth it if you use auxillary stuff like a whinch. If not then I heard the red top will do just fine. Yellow top- around $160-170

Thanks, Matt

Isn't the yellow top meant for auxilliary usage and the red top meant for primary usage? I was thinking of getting a red top for my truck because of the higher CCA - good for Canadian winters or at least that's what I was thinking.

Thanx guys! I've heard good things about the optima as well. But $170 is a bit steep, Going with the standard Exide 24 series at $57, lets see 57x3=171, so three batteries from now I'll be kicking myself for not going optima..........

Update, Exide battery was a no fit, centered top terminals (stock cables wouldn't reach)and a few other little things. Went to NAPA and got a DEKA (east penn mfg.)battery, dropped right in, 665 CCA all set to go! For what it's worth, I know from speaking with some of my contacts at DEKA that they build one hell of standard battery. Didn't know thats what NAPA had, so I'm pleased. Thanks again for your input..........

Thats good then, I thought I would let you know just in case you did have auxillary stuff.

If you were still in warranty the battery is free.

Dammit Ron - you had to say that. Mine died yesterday and I went and picked up a Red Top. Oh well, even though my warranty would have picked it up at least I know I have a better bettery than LR would have given me...

Put the old one back in and get a free interstate at the dealer.

Alan, I run the yellow top because I got it used for cheap. If you need a new battery ask for Exide Orbital Deep Cycle at your local Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper store. Can Tire is now carrying Nautilus Deep Cycle and I suspect it's the Exide Orbital in disguise. But the rating on it was less than on those Auto Value sells so beware. The Exide should be around $220 ($179 at Can Tire). Costco used to have Blue Top Deep Cycle Optimas ($213) but now they only seem to have the Yellow Top ($228).

Our Costco in SLC has both Red & Blue Tops with no Yellows.

The Red Top is usually the cheapest but it's not deep cycle. Also, my prices were in Canadian $$. :-) Was yours Will? Or was it USD? Every Costco seem to be different as far as stock goes too. Mine had Red Top and Blue Top Deep Cycle and now they only have the Red Top and Yellow Top.

Go to a car audio store and pick up a Stinger yellow top. It is made by Optima and usually a little cheaper.

Blue is a marine battery, but I don't see why it would hurt. I wonder what the difference really is?

I moved out to Phoenix three years a go in June. The battery died after two days of 116 degree weather. Bought a red top and not another problem. And yes it's still over 100 degrees in October. I need a cold front or a cool front or a not so hot front.

Thanks for the info Milan. I'll have a look at them too. One of the guys at work says he can get me a Pow-R-Surge battery for free. It has 1000 CCA and pretty good reserve capacity. The company I work for (diesel engine distributor - Detroit Diesel) uses them for industrial applications like generator packages and oil rig apps but we sometimes get requests for a different battery by the customer so we end up with these lying around. Has anyone heard of these batteries or know anything about them?

Optima is great. It is true that the Red Top is not deep cycle. But it works just as well. As long as you drive your Rover every day-its fine. I am running 6 Hella 4000 and upgraded speakers, small amp and Pioneer DVD and have had no problems with Red Top. But Yellow will give you that added piece of mind.
