the belt tensioner in My Disco II (99) is making a whistle-like noise. I had this problem before and ended up replacing the entire belt tensioner! the whistling I believe is from bad bearings. I tried to get the bearing out on the replaced one without success. is it possible to buy the pulley without having to buy the entire belt tensioner? if so, where can I buy it? perhaps one can replace the bearings only, but I am not sure on that. On an unrelated question, my Disco is Java Black in color, and I found the color code for it. where can I find touch up paint for this color code? any ideas?

Jorge, Did you replace your original tensioner pulley with another plastic one? Or did you replace it with the upgraded metal one? LR updated them to metal and was covered under the warranty. Sorry I can't help you on the touch-up paint. I think my D2 is beyond that type of TLC. |

There are TWO tensioners (or in rover speak, idler pulleys), it could also be the alternator or P/S pump or ACE pump etc making the bearing whine. The dealer can get you the touch up for $10-20, getting it anywhere else you will be paying that for hazmat shipping Ron |

Ron, pardon my igmorance, but can you expand on how the alternator/P/S Pump can make the bearing to whine. I do not have the ACE on my Disco so that is ruled out. if indeed one of these two was the problem, how can you isolate which one is? is it an easy/inexpensive fix. the whining is can be quite annoying at times! thanks |

The bearings in the alternator or P/S pump also can whine and sound like an idler pulley. You have to figure out what is making the noise. Use a long screwdriver and put the tip up to the end and the other end to your ear and move from component to component until you hear what is making the noise. Ron |
