I have a 95 Discovery that has a mind of its own. The steering wheel has about 3/4" to 1" of play in it. I have tightened up the PS box nut on top, but this did nothing (assuming I did it correctly). However, I had a LR mechanic fix this same problem two years ago and he said that all he did was tighten a certain nut and bolt. Which nut and bolt I have no idea! If anyone has an idea please post.

Have a friend sit in the driver's seat and turn the wheels left to right. You should be able to see your problem pretty quickly.

Thanks,
Mike B.

be careful as to not tighten the steering box nut too much. will end up with not so fun consequences. 1/4 turns only and drive. might
just need a new steering box. replaced mine in my first D1 after adjusting the screw on top first. the wheel should have a slight amount of play anyway.

I'm with Joey. My 96 had about an inch of play as well. I checked the archives and came across a suggestion about the panhard rod. I could barely move mine with my hand, and I tightened it up what seemed like a very small amount, but when I drove it, it made a world of difference.

From teh driver's seat, with the engine running, turn the wheel back and forth while watching the front wheel in reference to the body-usually, a loose or worn Panhard rod bushing will allow the body to move before actually turning the road wheel.

check your ball joints as well...if the rubber is gone, rusted, worn out, that might be the problem. it was for me.

Another way to find out if it is the panhard rod, just lean hard against the drivers side front fender and listen/feel for a pop or movement left to right in your vehicle....if you have any it probably is the panhard rod. Tighten or replace bushing as needed.

Find someone who has an old Series Land Rover, borrow it and drive that around for a few days, when you get back in your Discovery the steering will feel like a sports car.
