What is it? It always comes on briefly on startup but today it came on during my commute. I pulled over and restarted the truck and the light went out as normal. What is it? Torque converter? Transfer case?

thanks

Someone else might be able to add more but I believe an ABS sensor is out of adjustment.

Hey check the Nitrogen accumulator (round softball sized steel resivoire)...I've seen it where they go bad - rediculously simple to replace, its easier than changing the oil. Down side is they cost about 295$ so you want to be relatively sure. I cant quite remember the test sequence, but I think its:
Turn off engine, start engine. with gear in P, pump the brakes slowly but very hard to the floor about 50 times. Now, Im not sure but I think the light will go out or if its out will come on indicating a leak or defect in the accumulator. Please check the shop manual for the exact steps

i would have assumed the traction controll kicked in for a bit. where you driving on wet leaves or anything slippery?

i could be completely wrong here i'm just guessing.

Rob is right - the traction control light will illuminate if the system starts working (ie: sensing slip). If it is on all the time, then there is a sensor or ECU problem and the system is inactive. It is supposed to come on when first starting as the system is doing a self check.

Just had that happen in my Discovery a couple of weeks ago. Turned out to be an ABS wheel speed sensor.

since you're on the RR board, I'll assume you have a RR. the T/C light is the traction control light as RD and Bill have mentioned. T/C was first used on the '93 RR and it worked only on the rear wheels. Its an amber light on the 93s and will illuminate when the system is working.

Usually if there is a fault in the rear ABS system, that warning light as well as the T/C light will stay on. If the fault is in the front, then the T/C may or may not come on. On mine it was 50-50% of the time.

Usually it was the sensor becoming unseated due to hitting with a tree limb or something on the trial.

It was actually a useful light as if it started to come on too often and too long, I switched the rear locker on and kept on going out of that section.

Yes, I forgot to say that it is on a RR. It's a '95 LWB. The light is coming on all the time now. I checked the sevice manual disk when I got home and it confirms what you all are telling me. There is a problem with the ETC. Not much in there on how to troubleshoot but it looks like it is mounted under the overflow for the radiator which recently overflowed and may have caused some problems.

thanks for the advice.

Now I have a brake light flickering, sometimes steady and an intermittant TC light. The brakes still work great. The service manual doesn't help much so I guess I'll have to keep driving until something really breaks......

Is it the red brake light that is flickering? Have you checked the fluid level in the reservoir? The red light will illuminate for various failures, but flickering may indicate low fluid. Traction control is controlled by the abs, so if tc and anti-lock are illuminated, than neither system is functioning 100%. Normal brake function is likely, unless the brake warning light is indicating an accumulator or pump problem. If one of my customers called up asking these questions, I would encourage them to come in asap, to avoid a signifigant failure, or increased expense from burning up a very expensive abs pump!
just my 2 cents

Thanks Trevor, The red brake light is sometimes flickering, sometimes steady and very rarely off. If I let up on the brake pedal quickly, the light will extinguish until the next time I press the pedal. If I let up slowly, the light stays on. The TC light is more intermittant and is not easily tracible to anythin I am doing. Sometimes it's on, sometimes off. No tire slippage is involved to set it off. I read the service manual over and over and there is not much there for troubleshooting to a single component. A fellow rover owner said that he remebered hearing that worn brake pads can cause all of this. What do you think??
