the h4 60/55w bulbs have burned out on the head light conversion i did to my 88rr. if i up grade to a brighter light, the h4 xenon 100/80w super white bulbs, will this wattage be to much for the wiring system?

Probably. It'll burn out over time.

Upgrade the harness too for $90 - I think EE has the ARB kit.....

BTW - I run 110/130 in the Disco with a stock harness and no issues (2+ years)- though I still want to buy that harness upgrade kit

Bill, did you use at least a relay to divert the power away from the switch? I'd be concerned having that much wattage running through the switch.

I'm running 55/100 and just put in a relay for the high beam. Cheap - $5.

I know - silly me - I should do something more proper about that - it all runs on the stock circuit - but just haven't since there have been no problems in 2 years - to busy fixing all the other stuff that breaks!

I'm a newbie to this, but what do you mean put a relay in? Where can you get a relay and where do you put it. I'm not too electrically proficient but I would like to change my bulbs on my 98RR. I would like to know the safest way to do so. Thanks very much.

If you fit relays to the headlight loom you can even run H4 90/130 's without any trouble.

The standard Rover switches and pissweak and burnout quite quickly if you run high watt globes without fitting relays.

Where would I get a relay? And how would I put it in? I'm sorry if it's a stupid question but I'm new to all of this. Currently I have 100W on my 98RR, is that bad?

www.painlesswiring.com/relays.htm

part# 30815 Headlight Conversion/Extension Harness

The above harness made my lights about 10% brighter and is much less likely to ever have a problem because it is made for up tp 150watt bulbs. I did have do splice wires toget it to work(Rover bulb socket did not match the harness plug)

Take a look at Ottos pages on this: http://home.halden.net/discovery
You'll find some ideas for your problem (written for Discos).
I'd go for the Illustro unit, giving about 180W output. It's not roadlegal and I really guess it will burn reflectors if used daily, so it would probably be advisable fitting an override switch.
