I've been looking at the rovertym rear bumper for a D1 and found a TJM rear bumper for only $450. The TJM is about $300 less expensive so I was wondering what you all thought about the TJM rear bumper? Price is right but how does it hold up?

I just installed a TJM rear. Nice stout piece with 6 frame mounting bolts vs stock 2. Price was right, got 10% off at 4x4 connections. If you want more departure angle or lower qtr panel protection, consider others that remove the tow hitch.

One gripe, no provisions for side marker lites. I wanted for saftey, so I cut, ground & filed holes and mounted existing lites from behind and repainted just those areas with marine epoxy primer and black.

James,

I have both the front and the rear TJM on my Disco. I love the rear bumper! Very stout, stock lines, and no hacking required. Very polished finish and easy install. Good Luck

My Rovertym rear bumper is the prototype shown on the website. The inner panel that replaces the mud flap mount is very stout, but the bumper moved enough to dislodge the trim on both sides of the 1/4 panel. All pproduction bumpers now have nerf bars to protect the spare tire from rear impacts. Also, thereis no provision for lighting, and on the 96 and newer Discos, you need to keep the bumper mounted turn signal wired up or end up with a rapid flashing signal. Ibelieve RTE is developing a skid plate for the fuel tank to work with their bumper. I have a customer's Disco in the shop with a TJM rear and it looks suitable for the task. I just happen to be a very loyal RTE fan!

My observation of TJM is that they get whacked pretty often because of their poor departure angle - good thing they are as stout as they are.

Before I saw one in person I read and noticed two negatives about them (1) no rear quarter panel protection and (2) extends out farther than stock bumper but after seeing one in person last night at the SOLAROS meeting I am thinking it is worth it. It has passed up the RTE and Safari Gard rear bumper in my opinion because the two gripes I have it with it are not as big as the savings if you buy a TJM.

Who knows though, tomorrow I might be leaning towards a RTE.

Rear quarter panel protection was important to me as well, but the way safari gard delt with the problem is silly to me. It's literally cutting off your nose to spite your face. The TJM is nothing more than a beefed up version of the OEM bumper, which doesn't protect this area either. As far as sticking out more, I didn't even notice until I recieved and installed it. If your going to keep the reciever hitch, which I think is VERY important, then the amount it sticks out isn't relevant. Cutting off the strongest recovery point in the rear is just not a good idea to me. And of course price is the cherry on the cake. I have yet to see a rear bumper worth as much more money as they charge for the competition. If they were all the same price then It'd be a much more difficult decision. When I purchased my rear bumper the Rovertym wasn't available, so the decision was much easier. Now that it is available the choice is much more difficult. Good Luck

Try Aedofab's site. There rear bumper adresses alot of the issues everyone is talking about here. And I have heard nothing but good things about there stuff. Here is the link to the rear bumper page. Cheers Nutter http://www.aedofab.com/prod_rover/rearbumpers.htm

I can vouch for Aedofab, but I think people who don't want to cut any metal won't like it. It does require removal of the receiver and quarter panel trimming. The bumper is extremely stout, well manufactured, and the way the receiver is placed into the bumper I have absolutely no fear of yanking on it. My bumper and skid plate bolted on perfectly - absolutely no hassle. They still cost around $1000 depending on how you finish it but you do get a skid plate with it. If I have any complaint, its that the quarter panel protection does not quite extend to the wheel well.

I have a TJM rear bumper on my Disco1 and love it, another cool thing is that it's a lot wider so it's easier to sit my fat ass on and eat my lunch.

Scored mine from 4x4connection.com for $450 delivered.

Thanks for all the info. I want the RTE because I know it is stronger but the price of the TJM is great. Rear departure angles are the same due to the hitch. My rear qaurter panels have been just about ripped off so protection there is too late. I guess it will just depend on how much loot I can spare at the time.
Thanks

In the case of your qaurter panels being ripped off you should go with the Aedofab a little triming and it would clean up the looks back there. PLUS it moves the hitch in the the bumper and really helps your departure angle. Plus its priced well for what you get. Anyway thats my 2 cents. Nutter
