I have a 98' D1 and the oil light came on and the motor started to tick real loud in a instant. Its not low on oil and I did not give it enough time running to see if it was going to heat up. Is the oil pump dead? If so, where can I get one at a good price? Any help will be great.

it will never heat up, even when it throws the rod through the side of the block.

either the oil pump went dead (relief valve stuck wide open or shaft sheared), or the pickup screen is completely clogged (which is unlikely to happen in an instant), or you spun a bearing (which may make oil pressure to do down in a matter of several seconds, with noise getting progressively louder).

Just in case - try to notice whether the ticking is happening at every revolution of the crankshaft or every other; the second may mean a collapsed valve lifter (BME, the first indicator of low oil level), with a chance that your crank and camshafts are still okay.

In any case, pulling the pan is your next thing to do...

Look at front cover carefully and see if you see any cracks.

Pull pan, check pick-up, check for spun bearing, if spun bearing buy new shortblock :-(, if not it may be the oil pump which require a new front cover.

Oil pump failure on 4.0s is rare, most likely a spun bearing or clogged pick-up.

Do not drive with oil light on.

Ron, Peter,
Thanks for the advice. One more thing, this happened when I test drove the vehicle about a year ago and the dealer told me they would fix it before I bought it. Maybe that was a omen and I should not have bought it but the vehicle was hard to pass up with all things factored in. I have not had any problems except this oil pressure issue and with both of your opions I'm HOPING that the pick-up is clogged. I change the oil frequently (2-3000mi.) so what could be casing this to clog so frequently? Should I flush the motor? The vehicle had 75,000 mi when I bought it and was maintained by land rover til' 60,000. Any more advice?

Switch to synthetic oil. It will clean up the sludge after two or three oil changes.

Perry, there are conflicting opinions on flushing the engine.
Granted, you will clean up a lot of gunk from the top of the engine and pan and oil passages.
At the same time, there is a nonzero chance that some piece of crap (say, a blob of extra sealant squeezed out during assembly) will get washed down and get lodged in an oil gallery.
By following Bill's advice, you are less likely to cause any harm (if none is done yet, that is).
