I think Garmin is a strong contender for most popular GPS here on the Disco Web but I recently read about the DeLorme Earthmate wired to a laptop and it looks top drawer, especially with the interactive abiity for voice command. Is anyone really using this antenna and SW pgm on the road? Would like to read your use.

i have the setup and love it the new 2004 has a split screen and ability to track 4wd trails. even has many already mapped out for you. let me know if you have any questions. I have been using the delorme 2001 version until last week. just upgraded to 2004.

If you are going to run a laptop in your truck, all you need is a plain vanilla GPS receiver, and the Earthmate fits the bill. Many people favor the Garmin or other GPS units with a built in screen, because it can be used independently of the a laptop (or PDA). The Earthmate GPS receiver is useless unless you have a laptop or PDA connected to it. Of course with a laptop, you can run mapping software that is much more sofisticated than what a standalone GPS unit will give you.

I am using the 2004 verison also. I love it. It comes with the street atlas, which works awesome, even shows gas stations and fast food joints. I purchased the DeLorme Topo set aswell. This has the 3-d maps on split screen, and shows alot of the trails in my area. It has the voice commands, but I have not played with that yet. One of the disadvantges is that you cannot carry the GPS receiver with you if you go hiking or something. Other than that it's not a bad deal.

if street mapping is what you want then delorme is THE only way to go. I use it daily to find customers locations all around New England. It saves hours of time. very accurate as far as numbering also.

I agree, for street mapping, you can't beat Delorme.

I was curious about this product. I had a unused laptop and decided to buy the Earthmate. It's pretty cool and I can see it's potential but is there a tutorial or user guide for it? It came with no directions.

its in the program under the help tab. I just played around with it until I had a specific Q then looked it up. The program does way more than I will ever use though.

I have an iPaq and have a Navman sleeve and run the Pocket CoPilot software. What I am wanting is a topo that will work with my Navman sleeve. Does anyone know of this? The only option I have found is Maptech. Does anyone use them? Seem expensive.

Also does the Delorme Earthmate let you travel using the PDA and then sync it with your desktop/laptop in order to print out a map of trails that were taken?
