Hello all!
I just got a 99 disco series I and am in love with it. It is all stock and I have a few questions for you pros out there. I'm interested in offroading so I need your help. The tires are tiny and need to be replaced. I would like to upgrade to some Goodrich MT's or AT's but I believe that this would require a lift. Is 2" suitable? I would like to get into offroading and have heard good things about OME. I'm wondering what I need to do in order to upgrade these tires. Is a lift is necessary? If so how much should I expect to pay, what do I need, and do I need to trim my fenders. I don't want to get too crazy with the tires, something that could handle some trails and mud. Thanks for helping out a new guy!

Karsten,
Do a search, you will find all of the info you need. The common opinion around here is a 2 inch lift via OME HD springs and shocks. This will allow you to fit 32inch tires on your truck without cutting. You should be able to avoid any driveline problems as well. Many will chime in... I suggest you do a search and check the tech section.

I think most people would agree that the new mud tires are pretty much the best true "all terrain" tires. The problem with an AT is simply that for the most part they can not handle mud. If mileage is a concern, then I would not think muds are your best bet. The OME lift is a good choice, as it will actually enhance the overall driveablity of the truck. However, it can be somewhat expensive when buying shocks, springs, and getting them installed. I am not sure, but I would guess under a thousand for everything suspension wise, but not much less. Mud tires like the BFG run pretty expensive too, like $180 a tire. You could fit a 255/70/16 (BFG MT comes in this size) without any lift.

So it is possible to fit a 255/70/16 BFG MT without a lift or cutting? Will the tires rub the fender walls? I can always get a lift later, I need the tires now, mine are in bad shape.

Thanks a lot.

Matt - actually lots of rover suppliers would sell entire kit for somewhere under 600 (even buying separately we talking somewhere around 8 * 70 == 560, and kit cost less actually).

Throw in extra 428$ and you getting 4 new 235x85x16 TrXus.

Karsten - depending on where you are, you might just walk around tire places. About two local shops here running autumn sale - would sell used tires with plenty of thread left for like 10$/ea. Might buy you some time to get what you really want.

As of size - i managed to stick 235x85 with very minor trimming of front bumper and insides of rear fender on stock sagging D1. Didnt get it offroad, as i am waiting on my springs :-) But it runs well around town with no rubbing. Altough my suspension would be funky one, thats for sure :-)

Matt, look under the tech section and click on "tires" on the left side of the page. This section will give you the tire sizes for your D1 and what their effect is on the truck.

FWIW, I have a 96 D1 and recently I put BFG ATs 245/70-16s on. No trimming or lift necessary and it's a great tire.

Can someone varify that I can put 255/70/16 BFGMT's (no rubbing) on my rig without a lift or trim?

If you go Mud Terrain, I would have fitted larger wheels while at it...the tires mentioned are far wider than stock, but only around 0,5" larger diameter. If you fit MTs I guess that's because you intend some offroading, indicating you could use a bit more height under diffs!
Actually, the lifting doesn't do much for the rubbing - it only procrastinates rubbing: It's the wheels size as to the size of the wheel well that you should care about. Fitting taller tires means you can experience more stuffing UNTIL it rubs, but it will rub at some point whatever coil fitted.
I fitted 30,5 inch tyres, and are very pleased with the extra gain under the diff, and are not too pleased with the advice I got to stick to stock wheel size and stock coils when purchasing tyres and later coils.
I strongly suggest you think it over once more - what you will gain in offroad capability is just vast! At least that's my experience! (Wear sunscreen...).
For my personal experience on fitting 245/75-16, go here:

Thanks for all your info guys. I think I'm going to go with the ome 2" lift and either BFG MT's or AT's. As for the lift, could you all give me some suggestions as to where to find it for cheap? Also, should I go with medium or heavy springs? Thanks!

If you plan on getting a bull bar or winch at some point, go with the heavy duty springs.

Look at expeditionexchange.com they have a good write up on springs and shocks.

Karsten,
In my opinion, the cheapest/best place to get OME springs is from British Pacific. They only charge $58.05 per spring when you order a set of 4. I got a set of springs and shipping to Chicago in 3 days for only $266.71. I have never seen it cheaper anywhere else.

If you're going to buy OME springs, buy them from EE. They match the springs up so you don't have to mess around with the OME lean. You'll pay a little more, cut come out ahead.

I would recommend getting the OME HD kit matched from Expedition Exchange and ask for the driver side/left springs. They are a little taller than the passenger side. This will help when you eventually start adding more stuff (weight) to your truck.

I don't know if anyone else sells OME springs matched. If you buy unmatched springs, your truck may lean to the passenger side a little.

I think 255/70/16 may rub under compression but this is a guess based on the width. Actual width and height will vary from one manufacturer to the next. I think 245/70/16 will fit better on trucks without a lift.

I put 245/75/16 M/T without a lift but it required trimming on the rear fenders (you can also relocate the fender if you don't want to cut).

Guys,
I think some of you missed that he bought a Series I! The OME 2" lift will let you stuff 32's on a DII, but more lift is required for a DI. Do a search on this site as the subject has been beaten to death. Good luck!
