Looking at either a 96-98 Disco OR a 95 RR LWB. Primary use is as an occassional tow vehicle for my 4500lbs racecar/trailer. Occassional means 5-7 times a year, for about 400 miles each time round trip. Won't be daily driven (will be a 4th car). Any reasons for one over the other? I like the idea of the air suspension on the RR(when it works!), but the Disco has a much more versitile interior and seems to have less 'glitches'. The RR has a more powerful motor(slightly). Any way to make a Disco I handle better (on-road). I mean springs/shocks/sway bars to improve steering and roll control? Thanks! Raagi |

well... you get more power with the LWB's 4.2 than even with GEMS 4.0. Slightly? on paper, yes. By the seat-of-the-pants feeling, by a lot. And you get longer wheelbase and lower center of gravity than on a Disco 1. so I'd say a LWB is a better tow rig. The air suspension can be swapped out, or, since so many people ditch it, parts can be found at less than dealer's prices. |

As a tow rig, the LWB probably is more stable due to its longer wheelbase. I would suggest you replace the shocks with Bilsteins, consider replacing the bushes too if over 70k, and upgrade the brakes if those ventilated/drilled DBA brakes really work |

Chris is right, the LWB is going to be much more stable than the Disco. I have a 23 foot boat weighing right at about 5400lbs on the trailer that I have been towing with a 99 Silverado Z71 for the past couple of years. Last weekend I towed it with the Disco as I had to bring it up I-75 about 20 miles to be stored for the winter. The Disco had plenty of power and cruised nicely, but it really let the trailer sway violently above 70. This is a tendency that I have never noticed before with this trailer/boat combo. It has to be that the Disco is a shorter wheelbase. So, get the LWB rangie or buy something else. |
