Last month I replaced the sunroof rails on my 96 Disco. Today, the front sunroof wouldn't close. From the open position, it closes until its in the vent position and then no further. I've taken the thing apart again - and still it won't close properly.

Has anyone had this problem? The rails are brand new, and they've been working well. Now, I know most of you guys would just say silicon the thing shu and bet done with it, but after spending 200 dollars and 8 hours of work, I have too much invested to just silicon it!

What types of problem might a worn motor exhibit? The only thing I can think of, is that the motor is going out - and that's why its not closing properly.

Porter-I have a 96 Disco as well. Yes it is a love/hate relationship with these sunroofs. I noticed that the engine should be running to get the motor going and eventually close the sunroof. Try starting the engine and close the sunroof.

Alright. I finally fixed the problem. Here's what I found out. One of the rails was slightly bent, where it attaches to the molding, causing the moving part to bind up in the last half inch of closing. I took the entire thing apart again, and straightened the rail.

I also made sure that the both the rails were perfectly aligned. I think this could have caused the motor to stress out a bit more as one rail was moving the glass more then the other side. I did this by opening the sunroof with the motor, and then disconnected the motor and moved the rails completely back as far as possible, and then reattached the motor. This part is pretty easy. Just remove the plastic upper part and the motor is exposed, 3 bolts hold it in place.

Raymond, I was having the same problem. I had to have the engine running to get the motor to eventaully close (and then it finally quit closing). Try aligning the sunroof, it might help.

I tell you John, I was close to the silicon method, but again - all that time invested, I couldn't waste it.

Persistence and patience. You need both to deal with the intricacies of a Rover.

Porter-now that you fixed your sunroof...is it water tight? Mine leaks water from the sunroof console. Any insights???

And, John, standby on your silicone and your welding torch for the meantime.
