It is a total pain!! I went to Autozone and borrowed a fan clutch wrench kit. This has a big forked looking thing that helps hold the pully. This does not make it a picnic but it helps. I tried big screw drivers and pry bars and this was the only thing that worked for me. Charles

Same here, a local auto-parts store had a kit with several pulley holders. One of which worked for my DII. Sorry, I don't remember which size.

Reguarding the pry bar, where should it be positioned for leverage?

Got it. I bought a rubber strap wrench, tightned
it up on pulley and wedged wrench handle between
idler pulley and alt. one whack it was off.
nice to have a true value hardware down the road!
Thanks for input.

The pulley does not need to be immobilized to remove the fan clutch. Use either an air chisel or a hammer and big-ass screwdriver on the nut flat. A couple of impacts and it will just spin off. Quick and easy.

A friend of mine says he does this all the time at the garage. He holds the nut witha wrench lowers the car till wrench holds nut or if wrench is secure and then he cranks the engine. I never tried it, be carefull. I had to remove mine when the water pummp went and I removed the pump with the fan complete. Then i had a friend hold it while i unscrew it

Just did this job last weekend. Here's the deal:

Remove the serpentine belt and place one of those Sears rubber "strap wrenches" on the pulley. You'll need a 12" Crescent to undo the nut (a 12" Craftsman doesn't open up enough). You'll be working in opposition, that is, pulling on one and pushing on the other. Just when I thought I couldn't pull any harder, it broke free.

Even with the best penetrating oil, it was one tough mutha....

Cheers
