I finally had the chance for a good look at one today, in Big Bear (California.) A company up here in the mountains runs several of them on "offroad adventures" (for which the Pinzgauer is probably overqualified.) These things look unstoppable.

You can get ex-Swiss UNIMOG 404 for about 1/2 the price of a Pinz.

I haven't seen that. So far, I have found that the Pinz is less expensive and weighs a lot less.
I would take either, though.

Just for a lark, went googling for Pinzgauer and the first hit is this:
http://www.pinzgauer.uk.com/Intro.htm
and they say the Pinz is made in GB? Whats up with that?

did anyone else notice that the .wmv was created by Perrone?

I'm curious if anyone knows the history of this reel and how perrone came to get his hands on the media.

According to the site I got it from, it is the original promotion video from 1972 or something. Don't know how Perrone got it. Didn't even notice it.

It says on that UK pinzgauer website that they still make them in the UK today. Sweet, but can they be imported to the US?

trying to get a new pinz in is like trying to get a new land rover in, impossibly expensive.

you can get a mog in but still crazy money.

But you haven't seen new ones, which was Rob's point (I assume), around anywhere for 12k.

The Pinzies that are for sale in the States are like the IIa's or FC's for sale in the States: Parts trucks or meticulously-cared-for rebuilds/restore jobs.

Yeah, but since you can buy them new and not on the gray market, there's some advantage to that. You could drive over H1's in them too.

The Uk Pinz exist as a result of the British Military contracts....seems that the humber defender/wolf is no longer big or strong enough for the military who have made more purchases of Pinz

If you are looking for either nice pinz (4x4 or 6x6) OR if you are interested in newer model MOGS then you need to check out:
www.eurotruck-importers.com
I have bought several items from the owner, Sean, and he has great prices and very friendly. Probably one of the most knowledgeable in the pinz/mog business. Just FYI

I have been a member of the Pinz community for a number of years and have friends who own them. There was some desire to restore or improve the original factory video which a member of the Pinz community had rights to and did a film-to-video transfer of. He sent it to me, and I made a .wmv of it. I have improved the video quite a bit since that was made, but I have not yet released it.

The Pinz is a fundamentally different animal than a Unimog but both are quite fun. You can find info about each on the Spanish Trail Rovers site. I used to have the pinz video there and several Unimog videos as well.

I'd be happy to answer any questions about either truck as I've driven both, on and offroad.

Okay Perrone, what about either as a daily driver?

The Pinz is suitable as a daily driver. It's actually quite similar to the D90 in size, but is more maneuverable. The ride quality is actually quite good. In fact, it was smoother than my RR after I converted to HD springs. The Pinz is able to go about 70-75 mph and has very effective brakes.

The Unimog really is too big to drive daily if you are in urban areas, and it is quite slow. Max speed is about 60mph on flat ground in oxygen rich air (sea level).

Both are incredibly well built trucks, and parts are pretty easy to get. I did a writeup on the Spanish Trail page comparing the Pinz to a Defender. Maybe you should read it.

The pinz 710 is almost exactly the same size as a SI disco. As for the speed being 70-75 mph. That would be pushing it. They will travel at about 65 mph comfortably though.
As for the Unimog being slow and too big for urban use, yes and know. There are several different variations out there. For instance, you could get a U-140 and through a few minor gearing/axle options could travel comfortably at 65-70 mph. And it is about the size of a disco as well, just a wee bit taller.

If anyone is considering a Mog. Here is a brief rundown of some of the more common Mogs.
U-404 - gas engine, speed around 55mph, not comfortable for very long distances (IMO), but a cheap trail truck.
U-416 - diesel, speeds around 55 mph (stock axles), around 65 with high speed axles.
U-1300L - diesel, speeds vary between 55-70 depending upon axles, a good bit more comfortable.
U-140 - diesel, speeds vary with axles, about the same comfort level as a good 1300L, a good size for a all around truck.
I could go on, but you get the drift.

Just FYI, I have driven each of the above Mogs, and also others not listed. My descriptions/opinions are not word-of-mouth but first hand experience. I have driven them both on and offroad. In my opinion, I would go for a later model (ie, not the 404 or 416) for a truck you plan to use on a regular basis. Not saying that either the 404 or 416 couldn't be used regularly, but the comfort levels are not as good as the later models (for obvious reasons).

As for pricing, you can get a U-404 for around $5000-10,000, respectively.
U-416 standard cab or soft top in good condition will set you back around $12-25,000
U-1300L- standard cab, military version around $15-25k, non-military would run around $18-50k
U-140-standard cab, anywhere from $25-100k

The prices vary so drastically because of the varying conditions. ie, the more you spend the better the truck. It really just depends, but you get what you pay for. The prices I listed are not exact, but a very close example of what the different Mogs sell for. (ie, they can be less, or alot more depending upon mods made)
As for road use, yes they can be driven on-road, depending on your states regulations, but I've never heard of anyone having trouble with them.

There are several places that sell the 404 and 416 models in the US, but very few sell the late models. Eurotruck Importers would be my first call if I were in the market for a late model, but take your pick on the older ones. As for pinz sales, I'll get to that one later.
Just FYI.

Also, here's the link again,
www.eurotruck-importers.com
Oh, one more thing. No I don't have any affiliation with Eurotruck other than I have done business there and found the owner to be very knowledgeable and honest in the dealings.

I'm still in the club, just don't make it to as many things as I would like due to work.
Funny you mentioned about the buildup. Well, got divorced last year and had to sell some things, that being one of them. However, some friends and I were talking about building a hybrid recently.

Are you coming to SAE? Hell, we haven't hung out in quite awhile.....You ought to come up!!

Unfortunately, I just can't do much this time of year anymore. That college coaching job just gets in the way of SAE as well as the FL fall event, as well as the MAR.

The good news is we may be the only college in GA that is going to a national championship!

Don't rub it in too much. UGA isn't doing that bad. Yeah, I know they looked kind of rough the last few games, but....a win is a win. They will have a bowl game atleast. Maybe more but we will see. (since you brought up the whole college games thing)
Good to hear that the coaching is going well. And I hope everything falls to your favor in going to the nat. champ. That would be really cool.

Anyway, sorry you won't be able to make it to SAE, but I can send you some mud if you would like!! LOL....As I am sure that there will be plenty to go around.

As for my old project, I had it finished for about 3 months before we decided to divorce, and I ended up having to sell it off. But atleast I got what I was asking.
I am really wanting to start another project and I have one in mind, but I am kind of keeping it under wraps until I get almost done.
