thinking of trading in the 92 classic for a make two rangie. is this to be a wise decesion? do these have 24spline axles? comparing the two which will be the stronger off road. do they make all the skid plate kits for the make two or should i remove them from the 92 and retro fit them the newer one. or will they even fit. what years to avoid and what to look at. |

Wow, lots of stuff going on there: 4.0/4.6 rovers have the diff on the "wrong" side, and the t-case is a chain driven borg warner. That being said the driveline is much like the SII disco- or the SII disco took the driveline from the RR, however you prefer to see it. So the answer to question 1 is yes, they have 24 splilned axles that are not full floaters, with diffs on the wrong side. A diff guard for a series II disco should work, but i've never tried it. Bone stock, a RR40/46 will be "better" off road, with traction control, and air suspension it will be an easy drive. As for stronger- it depends on what type of driving off road you do. For most people who wheel once a year, a newer range rover will be an eye opening experience. Whether a RR40/46 would be an appropriate choice for a dedicated 4-wheeler is anyone's guess-but faults in a 40/46 are sometimes immobilizing (and thats a bad thing) I would buy a late 99 (bosch) truck with bosch, side impact airbags, and 4 wheel ETC as opposed to just rear wheel. |

Micky, check-out http://www.okoffroad.com/okrovers/main.htm to see a write-up by Alan Bates who also frequents this site. You can get an idea of how to start making a P38 RR into a more trail worthy LR. Alan also has a '92 RR so he could make a very good comparison for you. On ETC, we had it on the '93 RR in the rear. While it helps, we put in a frt and rear locker so it became a moot point. Good luck, Jaime |

Hi Jamie, hows the search and dismantling of the RR going? Micky: RRC and P38 are almost totally different. Nothing off your 92 will fit. The P38 is a much larger vehicle with worse breakover and departure angles than the RRC, unless you lift it. They are both awsome off-road just a little more cumbersome in the P38 through tight trails. In my opinion, the EAS in the P38 is the biggest problem and I would recommend converting to coils if the system fails, you do not want to be on a trail with a failed EAS and on your bumpstops. The P38 will cost you alot more in overall maintanence so be prepared to pay if you have a shop or dealer do the work. The second most trouble spot is the climate control system, can be very costly to fix. Make sure there is no testbook symbol in the LCD panel. Very common to have failed blend motors, $800-$1000 repair. Make sure you have history of the car and check to see if it was well maintained, if not don't touch it, you will be playing catch up. Get the newest year you can afford, the 99-1/2-up have the Bosch engine management system. Here are a couple of sites with some good info if you haven't checked them out already: http://www.rangerovers.net http://www.robisonservice.com/servicedep/rover_advice1.asp There are more and more resources on P38 info/repair than ever, so self diagnosis and repair is much easier than before. You could just keep the 92 and use it as a trail vehicle, probably not going to get very much for it if you trade it in. Try doing a search, there has been some interest in the P38 RR's lately here on dweb. http://www.discoweb.org/cgi-bin/discus/search.cgi

thanks for the information on the rover. the p38 looks great. your probabbly right with not getting the money out of this rover that i have got into it. so hopfully i can add 24 spline axles and a locker with no problems. roof rack, swing away spare tire carrier, limb raisers, jungle treckers tires, steel rims, rear mounted winch, rear fuel skid plate, sand ladders. the list goes on and on. dam hobbies they just dont stop. oh well it keeps me out of trouble! |
