This on a '95 5-speed w/ 4.6 motor -- Over the past several weeks I noticed the truck pinging a little on hard acceleration between 2000 - 3000 rpm. Which I attributed to carbon build up in the combustion chamber. Check under the hood today and noticed that the vacuum advance on the distributor was just kind of hanging there and the fasteners were missing. Without anything to hold it back on, I just pulled off the vacuum advance and wrapped the little hose around out of the way, just leaving the hole open on the side of the distributor. Now the truck actually seems to run better -- there is no more pinging sound on hard acceleration. The question is, do I really need a vacuum advance? Am I doing any damage without one? Thanks, Norm |

Norm Vacuum advance does 2 things improves fuel fuel comsumption and lowers engine temp. Most units are stuffed and need replacing. Just suck on it and see if it hold vac, if it does screw it back on. Or buy a new one if it is stuffed, They are good for 50km per tank. |
