I have found a 1996 discovery with 113,000 miles on it. Now since I am broke this is all I can afford. I have a couple questions. 1st I have heard many complaints about how high maintenance a land rover is. What do you guys think. Also do you think the mileage will cause it to have more problems or do you think with that many amount of miles it is broken into and will have less problems. i really need some answers because i am in love with this discovery but i dont want to buy it if i have to spend tons of money in repairs and stuff like that.

I would really check the history of the Disco to verify that it was maintained well. If it wasnt it could drain your wallet very quick. Check the transfer case and diff lock linkage. Also check the injectors and valves for carbon build up. Inspect the underbody closely too. A Land rover is a some what x-pensive truck to have, but I wouldnt buy anything else.

I agree, but how much do they want for it? I have a 96 se-7 and love it so much I'm going to drive it until it corrodes into dust. I have never had anything major go wrong, I bought it two years ago with 75k on it and now have over 90k, I swithched to syn oil and am slowly replacing all fluids with synthetic. It starts and drives great. As far as maintenance goes, my brother-in-laws new H2 has been in the shop weeks at a time. Rovers are actually easy to work on, get a manual and post here when you get over your head. Take it for a test drive, a real test drive, then get underneath and check, shake and look hard at stuff. They are the ultimate SUV.
Good luck, have fun,Ron

friend if you are broke. the disco is not the truck for you. you need to buy it cheap enough that you can still afford $150 a month maintence.

it wont be everymonth but it could be 300 this month nothing next month then 500 in the winter...

not to mention you will want to beef it up. and thats where the rest of the money goes.

Look for a used Toyota truck or 4-Runner.

Drew - most likely you will cough up about 1-3 grands in first few months, when you will start modding truck to your taste, replacing parts for reliable ones - springs, shocks, tires, drive shaft or two, may be ring/pinon replacement, better alternator, starter.. Who knows you might go completely wonky and buy some off-road accessories (namely: differentials, sliders, bumper, rack)

Other than that - most likely you wont get into any more issues with truck than any other brand.
I.e its good idea to save for potential repairs upfront, and you can always get extended warranty to cover most crappy breaks. But there is nothing scary.. Good thing about rovers is that it would run pretty well with not much care.. If you dont mind to spend some time with wrench in hands and truck isnt falling apart - you can manage very well in very tight budget.

Of course there is gremlins factor.. but they seems to be more attracted to GMs and Toyotas :-)
